The fact that autism has become an "identity" rather than a diagnosis is just. Insane.
It's always the most moderately disabled people who say this shit too. Like. They use the fact that they technically qualify as disabled (which, to be fair, they do) to talk above anyone worse off. Of course, it's always the least disabled people who go on about "it's not a competition! We're ALL disabled" shut the fuck up oh my god.
I remember reading people discuss Encanto, and how the mother (who can cook food that heals any wound) never healed her daughter's bad vision. And then you had a bunch of people coming out of the woodworks like "Well! I wouldn't want my blindness healed! It's a part of who I am!" Like ok Janet, I'm sure you and your -2.5 prescription really love being blind, but when your at -8 it becomes significantly less fun.
I am very well aware that my disability is "lesser" than other people's. I only need to wear glasses and I'm mostly okay, I can have a pretty close to normal life as long as I have my glasses. But I'm not talking over blind people with canes like "well! We're BOTH blind and I think being blind is a gift because I get to wear cute glasses" holy fuck I would shoot myself. But I also don't tolerate more disabled people telling me "you're not disabled because you can just wear glasses and be fine" like if my glasses ever break or get lost I Am Fucked. i AM Disabled. Functioning, but still disabled.
Not to derail from autism, just speaking from experience about a general trend I notice with disabilities. Autism is a disability and (SOME of) the "high functioning" ones are absolutely ruining it by going all "well I don't see it as a disability uwu I'm just quirky!"
And then you have the "nooo that's EUGENICS!" People who crawl out of hell whenever you discuss trying to prevent kids being born with disabilities and... I can't.
