This is my blog about my ongoing writing project, Sun Rising!

Here, I'll be posting updates, ideas, and basically anything writing (and occasionally, not) about my misadventures while I attempt to formulate, write, and hopefully publish my first novel! I appreciate any tips, critiques, or advice with anything I post, so long as it's constructive!

This post will no doubt be added to and edited as I learn how to use tumblr better, so bare with me!

Sun Rising is the titular novel in a expanded universe.

Sole Eigher was born in Aohrea, a peaceful country with only one blight-- thieves. People who steal power from the gods to give themselves unholy abilities, turning from human to curse. These people are called Maldym, Lyx is a Maldym on the run, escaping from the only place he has ever known into a world he knows nothing about. He claims that he did no such stealing. Instead, he was born a Maldym. At odds with each other and their versions of the truth, Sole and Lyx are branded fugitives by Aohrea and forced to work together to reach the only place that might accept them: Heidyn. But the journey is dangerous. And according to Sole, Heidyn is even more so. While Lyx has been told it's a safe haven for people like him, Sole has only known it as a country full of heretics. Are they running from the flames to the wolves? Or is Heidyn a place where they can truly be safe?

Book Update #5

Considering the last update was me announcing I finished writing Chapter Eight, I felt it was finally time to write another, considering...

I FINISHED CHAPTER TWELVE? OOPS?

Haha, sorry for the (VERY) late update! As I'm sure most of you are well aware, I'm in my last year of University, so I've been very busy juggling the existential dread that comes with that fact. I also have about 40 days left of school which is horrifying, since I was one of those kids who actually liked learning (still am). Grappling with the horrible job market, the idea that I might never return to education, and the numerous job and internship applications I've submitted as well as everything else in my life has been exhausting, but I'm getting through it.

Writing has always been a way to relieve stress for me, and that hasn't changed; it's only evolved. Writing something with the intention to publish it is so very different than casual writing, it almost hurts. But I love it, and have been keeping up semi-consistently since my last update.

When I'm not worried about ALL OF THAT STUFF, I'm thinking about Project Hail Mary. That movie has fundamentally changed me as a person. I will never, ever be the same. I know a LOT of people feel the same.

ANYWAYS, thanks for sticking around and following me on this journey. Prepare to hear more sad stuff as I get closer to graduation. I've also debated writing out some quotes from Sun Rising to post here, so look forward to that! I'm still trying to think of more interesting posts to make about the series, but its low on my list of priorities right now.

Second visit to the Tavern, thanks for having me!

This is a funny prompt for me, seeing as the first Act of my book revolves around great change— specifically, two of our main characters fleeing the country they were born in. Lyx, who has been confined and subject to experiments his entire life, views Heidyn (the country they're fleeing to) as the only place he could ever be safe. Sole on the other hand, thinks its a place of danger and chaos, perfect for people like Lyx. But she has no choice but to flee with Lyx when she gets caught with him.

And that's the best I can do without spoiling too much :). It's within the first few chapters of Sun Rising though, so answers can be found easily there. Instead, I also wanted to reflect on the fact that the narrators only spend a brief amount of time in Aohrea— the country they both flee from.

I got asked for my reasoning a few times by some friends. Not being able to see much of the country makes Lyx a far more relatable narrator than Sole (which of course, plays into the themes of the book). Lyx only remembers pain from Aohrea and thus the reader feels angry at the country and distrusting. Sole mourns a country the reader never got a chance to really know, making it harder to relate to her feelings, especially when juxtaposed with Lyx's.

That aside— Lyx is happy and the free taking that leap. Sole is angry and distrustful. That sums them up pretty well.

As for the bonus question… I've had this story planned out for SOOOOO long that at this point, its impossible to bring in someone new that i didn't conceptualize like, three years ago. So I'll pick Aurty, who is Sole's younger brother and who gets to play a larger role in this draft/edit. I love him SO much. I really cannot say ANYTHING else without major, multi-book long spoilers, but let's just say…. keep him close to your heart.

A famous day, huh? Well I can tell you this: there are plenty! As of where I am at in the editing process, none have really been relevant to the plot/characters, but as I've begun plotting out the second SRU book, you'll definitely be hearing more about them as time goes on! The thing about the event of this first book is that we're perceiving this world and its cultures from three different perspectives during a time where learning about a lot of cultural nuance is the last thing that they're worried about. It's very plot heavy if I'm being honest.

But… it just so happens that the plot is very revenge oriented. Now that I think about it, every front-to-end plot I've written out in this universe has revenge at it's climax. Huh. Surely that's not something I should be worried about.

Hi everyone! Sorry that I haven't been able to update in a while-- honestly, I haven't done a lot of writing these last few weeks. February, about a week after recovering from my wisdom teeth removal, I was out AGAIN for another week with bronchitis. And after that, I had to dive straight into working on finals for school. I've been REALLY busy.

However, starting this week I'm off for Spring Break and promised myself to carve a few hours out each day to get some more writing done, so expect more updates! Thank you all again for sticking around, I really appreciate it :)

Something catches your attention...

A newspaper about a young woman, her face printed large on the front page. Sole Eigher... that must be her name.

Who is she?

Text:

Sole Eigher, twenty (born the 13th of Waning Fall 1349), has officially been reported missing by Aohrean Guards along with her younger brother Aurty Eigher, sixteen (born the 5th of Waning Spring 1353) after an altercation at their place of residence following the search for violent criminal, Lyx. Guards last spotted the two siblings in their home before they disappeared out of thin air, reportedly due to the Maldym’s powers.

Sole graduated two years ago with top marks in her Academy, where she studied History. Since then, she has been working as an apprentice under a woman named Tiehra at Tiehra’s Historians Society. Tiehra denied to comment at this time regarding Sole’s behavior at work.

The connection between the Eigher siblings and the Maldym is still unclear. For precaution, it has been reported that the Eigher sibling’s parents have been detained in an undisclosed location until further evidence can provide a clearer explanation. Reports note that neither of the parents were home at the time of the incident and had been under lockdown near their work the night prior to the incident.

The Guards reassure that the situation will be dealt with quickly, and that banishment will be given to the Maldym as soon as he is caught. They also stated that the Eigher siblings would be banished as well, as per protocol, if they are charged with aiding the Maldym. More updates to come.

Book Update #4

I am officially FINISHED editing Chapter Eight!

Thank you to everyone who has interacted with these posts, it truly means the world to me. I'm in contact with a good friend who plans to start beta reading these chapters for me. For now, I'm focusing on remembering why I'm doing all of this in the first place:

I love my book.

It's hard to remember when things get difficult. Then I read back over everything and get reinvigorated. THAT'S why I struggle. I love writing. I love my characters. I love my story. This jog to the finish line reminds me every day that I am a writer because I love to write, not because I pump out "perfect" writing all the time (not that I do, of course).

Synopsis: When Velia Greene accepts her newest job, she thinks nothing of it. A three day train ride, a secret piece of cargo–simple enough for a thief who can slip right past any security. After all, Velia’s never been caught. How could she be, when nobody can see her?

It’s lonely, being invisible to everyone until they care for you. But it does give you an excellent advantage at sneaking.

But on the train, everything starts to go wrong. Four passengers overhear her and discover her presence. A strange man somehow sees her immediately. The cargo is more precious than she could’ve imagined, and there’s someone aboard who will stop at nothing to get it before the train arrives…

Synopsis: Jax Castle is the best junker this side of the Milky Way. That’s probably cause the junker business is just a front for his real skills: smuggling. Together with his team Aaliyah the mercenary and little brother Quin the pilot, there isn’t any job they can’t do!

It’s a dangerous life, always hiding from the authorities, always staying below the radar, but like previously stated, there isn’t anything they can’t do.

Unfortunately, once they meet Sepia Windsor along with his crazy scheme, the authorities start cropping up everywhere. The crew didn’t even agree to help the kid, but before they know it, they’re recruiting other dubious help, landing themselves in the biggest prison in the galaxy, and becoming the top wanted criminals in the whole universe. And the so called treasure may not even be real. They are NOT getting paid enough for this; if they survive, Jax is going to kill that Sepia kid. Or maybe himself. He’s not particular.

Discussion for the Table 

What are your writing goals this year?  How do you measure your progress?  Word count, number of chapters, time spent?  What works best for you when setting goals?

The BIG goal is to finish editing the first book and get a full outline/start writing the second! I would also love to start querying this year!

For me the most motivating thing has been actually starting a blog to help keep me accountable. Plus I have at least two days a week with three hours carved out where I am sat down and being as productive as possible! Of course I write way more than that, but having those days to fall back on when I need them is really helping me not get burnt out

Book Update #3

I finally... did it.... Chapter Seven is DONEEEEE!!!!

*cue the celebration*

Anyway... this chapter was actually not that hulking as I thought it would be. I was being overdramatic. But damn was it hard. I blame all the class work I got the last two weeks. Plus... you know... helping launch an entire Student Fellowship program at my college... which is the first one to exist here...

I've been trying to brainstorm some fun post ideas to keep active here involving writing/the SR universe. Clearly I've made a character post-- here, if you haven't had the chance to check it out-- with more to come, but besides that I don't know what else to do! Let me know if you have any fun recommendations or ideas!
