i couldnt decide between these two similar ideas i had so you get both LOLLLLLL
if i couldn't have any of the obvious first choice superpowers i would want my power to be the power of i can go anywhere and its not a problem. the way this power would work is that as long as im peaceful and respectful i can go anywhere and nobody will see it as weird or see me as a target for hostility. i can walk into a cool house to politely peep the decor or walk into a tall office building to politely peep the decor or walk around a city at night alone to politely peep the decor or walk into a strange facility to politely peep the decor or walk onto a plane and ride the plane to its destination and then walk around there to politely peep the decor and its fine as long as im chill. no need to make me faster or anything i can just walk at a normal pace. its good for the soul.

I have this au where Simon took almost 2 decades to tell Grace how he feels. I posted this on insta but never really got to ramble on the full context of the au.
(Please excuse my grammar as English is not my first language
Simon fell in love with Grace during the 2nd year of him in the Hail Mary. He was unsure of his feelings up until they arrived in Erid, where he told Rocky and Adrian his emotions and his struggles to accept himself. Adrian advised to work on himself first before telling Grace his feelings, and so he did- he worked on himself for 16 years. And this comic is essentially how he finally confessed to Grace. No fear and thoughts of regret, just pure honesty. He's okay with Grace not reciprocating his feelings, because he's not afraid anymore.
Simon is a very dear character to me (maybe the reason why i project myself on him) I want him to actually work on himself and not the relationship, even if that means it takes him 16 vears. I like seeing him happy, not because Grace loves him, but because he loves himself
Long post (kinda) but ye i just wanted to yap about this bc its been in my head for weeks now.
no but im thinking about the videos diaries now bcos for like 20 years Grace and the other astronauts were all remembered as the heroes who went on a suicide mission to save the sun? which is impressive on its own but once the beetles come back and some of the videos get released everyone is like :O :O :O bcos not ONLY did Ryland Grace nobly volunteer to go on a suicide mission to save the sun, he did the whole mission by himself after the other astronauts died and made first contact with an alien species while he was at it?? he's basically the best guy in history??
but then someone leaks the Full Unadultered Ryland Grace diaries and there's gonna be various Realisations along the lines of
oh my god he didn't volunteer. oh god he was so angry & miserable and lonely up there. they just sent this sweet man to die in space against his will. oh we're all alive because they killed this poor man. okay.
oh my god he was so stupid he was such a stupid dork he nearly got us all killed so many times
age gap
Listen as an aroace person myself, I get it that people don’t want Grace to be in a relationship but on the other hand, as an aroace person, he should be able to be a monsterfucker.
Rewatched venom with my friend. Woe, AU be upon ye. @howdywallflower - co-parent of this au
More doodles for this au
right so reportedly we got the karaoke scene in the movie because ryan gosling overheard sandra hüller singing to herself in some downtime on set and approached the directors to say "if we have her here and don't ask her to sing in the movie then we're insane," so the scene was hastily planned and recorded during the last day they had with that set; stratt grew up singing in an east german youth choir because hüller did, too. a fun meta textual wrinkle this adds is that gosling is also a singer but grace doesn't take a turn with the mic, so you can read the scene not just as stratt saying "I am a full human being, I just can't be for this project, you get to see it for two minutes before I turn it off again" but additionally "you could be doing this exact same thing but you aren't even willing to give us two minutes." his doomed work friend the trained choral singer, his fated bestie the being who communicates only through song, his world-saving probes named for the most famous musicians ever, his choir-based soundtrack underpinning all his actions, and his unwillingness to sing himself.
"ryan gosling can sing?" yeah mate! he had a band, la la land was a musical, he had that song in the barbie movie, and I think there was a lot of singing involved in being a mouseketeer but idk I'm ten years too young to have ever seen any of that. I'm quite partial to this clip from lars and the real girl because that is some very good control and support for someone lying on their back with their legs propped up. if you haven't seen the movie then don't even worry about the life sized doll btw she's great she works as a hairdresser.
#i normally headcanon that he's tone deaf #but ykw the idea that grace CAN sing and chose not to in the karaoke scene.... it really fits......... #he doesn't wanna embarrass himself. he doesn't wanna be vulnerable. very typical grace moment. #he keeps making these brief little grabs for human connection then walking it back. he'll go a certain distance but no further. #it would fit really well with the scene before that where he and stratt are talking #which is framed in the directors' commentary as another bid for connection from him but like. it kind of isn't? #or if it is then it's not a very good one. #he says she's mysterious. she shares a personal fact about herself. #which he does not react to or respond to in any way #then proceeds to bulldoze over the conversation just talking about whatever he was planning on talking about anyway. #like. i guess he is reaching out to stratt in his own way? #but it pretty clearly demonstrates that he doesn't really see her or know her as a person and isn't that interested in doing so. #like. he's in there sitting at the bar doing paperwork. #staring wistfully at other people Making Connections then avoiding their gaze when they catch him at it. #he won't go over to join any of these people he's known and worked with for possibly YEARS at this point #and he won't get up there and sing. because that necessitates trying‚ which carries the implied possibility of failing. #being part of something means maybe getting hurt when you don't have it any more. (via @grimark)
hope you don't mind me pulling this out of the tags (edit after writing this rest of this: and sorry for hitting you with a wall of text, this was meant to be two paragraphs max 😭) because that is an internal contradiction in the scene that really grabs me. I think it is an honest bid for connection, grace is trying to do a "haha it looks like we're both a little uncomfortable with the party dya wanna talk about that maybe..." and he wouldn't have approached her in the first place if he weren't interested in trying to make something happen there, but he fumbles it because a) he's still scared of connection even when it's what he's looking for so keeps hedging instead of being direct, and b) he fundamentally misunderstands that her reason for being a wallflower is different than his.
first, you're completely right, he's making a series of grabs here and keeps walking them back. what he wants is to bond with the only other person who looks like she's also uncomfortable over how interacting with people is difficult and makes them both uncomfortable, and he demonstrates his difficulties with interaction very elegantly by failing to start small-talk like four times in a row and apologizing for even trying to initiate a conversation before getting to the one thing he's there to say. he wants to stand close to her, but he chooses the side of her the puts a big metal pole between them. he asks her a few personal questions and gets sincere answers, but then he feels awkward and looks away and pulls his hat over his eyes. he wants to connect with her but no he doesn't. he wants what he wants but no that's scary.
secondly, and this it where I think the Internal Contradiction secret sauce is hidden, his small-talk keeps failing because stratt negates nearly everything he says in this scene. "permission to board?" "you're already aboard" / "did you get a free hat?" "I bought them" / "you don't sing?" "yes I do" / "you're mysterious" "no I'm not" / "sorry for bothering you" "you aren't bothering me" / "this is a weird party" "is it?" / "this must be hard for you" "no it isn't." he's making a lot of casual assumptions about the kind of humor she responds to, her recent activities, her hobbies, whether she even likes him, etc., every single one of them is wrong, and they all underpin his main wrong assumption about her in this scene: why it is that she's hanging back from the party. he thinks it's the same as his reason, i.e., that she finds social interaction and vulnerability difficult. she doesn't. he gets tongue-tied trying to make conversation with her and feels awkward about it because he thinks it makes her feel awkward, but she doesn't mind it at all. he's being a wallflower because connection is difficult for him, but she is being a wallflower out of a choice not to connect. it won't help her do her job, so she's abstaining. this is a bona fide bid at bonding from him, he's saying "want to bond about how neither of us can bond?", but because he hasn't bonded with her he's blind to the fact that she isn't bound to not being able to bond.
he gets the closest to really talking to her and learning more about her as a person in the last moments of the scene by asking some big questions that he doesn't try and pre-answer, but then he averts his eyes, falls back on trying to make a joke with his salute, and leaves. he's actually doing it there for a second! he directly says what's on his mind and stops autofilling who he thinks she is, and she responds positively by hitting him with that big smile, and then he just. shrinks away again. he works out how to stop fumbling this conversation and gets exactly the connection he'd come to her for and then balks at it. the existential questions about god and humanity's future are suddenly too much. when he's on his A-game he can successfully bait her into breaking her "no camaraderie for me" rule, but he won't respond to her in kind. she'll take a turn at karaoke to show everyone that she can; he won't.
movie!grace's central character flaw is that he thinks he just can't, he believes that he lacks the secret sauce that makes other people full, competent individuals who are capable of doing hard things and being meaningful to each other. this is untrue, he absolutely can, he just hasn't figured out how. to bring this back to the singing, his bid to her here is basically sidling up to say "hey, you also Can't, right?", having difficultly accepting it when it seems like she actually Can, aborting the mission when he also Can for a few seconds in a row, and then watching in silence as she demonstrates that, yes, she absolutely Can. he goes into the interaction thinking they're alike in both being unable, she finishes the interaction by suggesting they're alike in both being able. he might not know how to steel his nerves and get on the mic just now, but fundamentally he could make the exact same choice as her and do the exact same thing if he so chose to motivate himself.
adjustment period
meme redraw. grace turn around your you is burning
do you think this would make him even more of a cool teacher or would he be demoted immediately.
You know what I actually really wanna talk about this-
Grace who had an educational channel on YouTube where he mostly just talked about science in an easy and accessible way and his little mascot was a fox. He didn't want to put his face on the internet, but he also wanted to be able to articulate with his hands and have an actual board to draw/write on and point to.
I think he'd make the suit himself. From his classroom we know he's an arts and crafts kinda guy- so I wouldn't really put it past him if he tried to make a suit himself. (Plus I doubt he'd have the money to get a proper suit)
Anyways- I think he would hand out science puns pins at cons. I think he'd slowly become a pretty beloved creator in the community.
No one knows who he is- and he plans on keeping it that way.
Eventually, he stops posting. Just randomly stops and there's no updates anywhere. People wonder what happened to him, if he's okay, or if he simply just... decided to stop creating.
And then years and years later, the logs from the beetles are released- and there in the background on some of the videos you can see a fursuit head.
Of course the guy who saved two plants and made first contact twice would be a furry.
Also- I really like the idea of not only Graces kids from the classroom getting some closure from this, but also the younger viewers who grew up watching his videos to help them understand subjects they were currently taught at school, all grown up, getting to see just who their silly fox teacher was.
Government assigned fursona
(I gave up halfway through)
