Something I like to think about a lot is the circumstances behind Taka being recruited into Hope’s Peak.

I mean, the definitions of “talent” and “skill” are pretty flexible when it comes to DR, but the game still took the time to point out that Taka and Makoto are sort of outsiders compared to the others because they got into the school without relying on talent (I could also mention characters who got in purely because they’re heirs to something i.e. Byakuya, Sonia, and Fuyuhiko, but that’s besides the point-). And Makoto got in through the raffle, so what does that make Taka?

And yeah, it could be that he’s just so hard working and has done so much that his character alone was able break the system and get him into the school, but I still like to think of other possibilities.

There’s a reasoning that I feel fits more in line with the kind of institution Hope’s Peak was revealed to be, and that’s the idea that Taka was accepted purely based on image purposes (and to an extent, his connection to his grandfather). To present him to nation as this underdog that will exceed their expectations and will furthermore make Hope’s Peak look like an even better school.

Like what if instead of his grades or accomplishments being at the forefront of their minds when they accepted him, it was the fact that he is the grandson of a disgraced prime minister? They invited him to their school because it would make people talk. If the public monitored the product of a disgraced family grow to become successful in life, it would only make Hope’s Peak look better. Yeah, it could really be Taka’s own work ethic that gets him places, but the public will instead see that he attended Hope’s Peak. They will see that they achieved the impossible and made the Ishimaru’s look good again. And Taka isn’t aware of this. He just thinks he got in because he’s a hard worker, proving that even the average citizen can accomplish great things.

It’s still worth taking into consideration that this reasoning could apply to other characters (Mondo’s one I could see getting invited to the school for a “redemption arc.”), but I feel that it works better with Taka. He was able to reach one of the best accomplishments of his teenage life, but unbeknownst to him, it was for reasons that go against his main ideology.

it’s fun to revisit this little idea almost 3 years later. because even now, i still have more to say about it.

because i wrote this before i even knew that toranosuke was a hope’s peak alumni. so i think that gives hope’s peak even more of an incentive to want to “fix” the ishimaru’s. because it’s a problem they created.

think about it. it’s said that when you go to hope’s peak, you’d be set for life. i think a lot of that comes from just the attention one gets for being scouted by hope’s peak. i feel like a lot of kids get on people’s radar because they got scouted. people with power who never would’ve thought beforehand to work with these kids are all of the sudden waiting for them to graduate so they could snatch them up and have them contribute to whatever business endeavors they have.

so what if this happened with toranosuke?? him being scouted by hope’s peak got a lot of people to notice him. throw in him expressing a desire to go into the business and political world. and all of the sudden there’s people at his door willing to help him succeed. that wouldn’t have happened without hope’s peak.

so when the scandal happened, and the public opinion on toranosuke and the ishimaru’s took a plunge. do you think they also partially blamed hope’s peak for “introducing” him to the public eye. he wouldn’t have gotten as far as he did without hope’s peak. so they were to blame as well.

and of course, hope’s peak can’t have a tarnished reputation like that. the idea that they helped a corrupt businessman/politican’s journey to fuck over the country just can’t be attached to such an honorable establishment. so when they see that his grandchild is doing well in school and even set up a public morals committee in his middle school, they thought of a plan.

if they get an ishimaru to graduate from their school and do good things for the country (something kiyotaka plans to do himself), then it’ll look like they “fixed their mistake.” it’s the ultimate apology. it’s repaying a debt. and kiyotaka is none the wiser. he just thinks he got in because he broke the system. he got in not relying on natural talent, like his grandfather, but by hard work.

and it’s true! he didn’t get in because of his talent. but it’s a lot more tied to his grandfather than he thought.
