au where Damian’s on ok-enough terms with his mother’s side of the family that they keep in contact, and on a phone call with Ra’s he finds out about Tim having lost his spleen; a fact which Tim did NOT alert the rest of the bats to due to a mixture of him not remembering that it might be relevant and him not wanting to deal with all the questions/shock of it all. luckily for Tim, Damian grew up in the league and has dealt with/seen so much shit in his life that he too does not really think Tim being spleenless is that important, and doesn’t think to bring it up.

unfortunately, Damian is also the youngest brother and is, in essence, a little fucking shit. so a couple months later when Red Robin has to meet up with Batman, Nightwing, and Robin to discuss the ring of illegal organ harvesters that Robin and Nightwing have just infiltrated, Damian hands over a gift bag with a clearly bitten-back grin and falsely-innocent expression.

Tim opens the back and genuinely bluescreens.

“I- I uh,” Damian chokes back a giggle. “I heard you needed one of these.”

Tim’s face is so uncomprehending that Dick snatches the bag away and moves to open it, complaining about how Damian had made them stop at a craft store on the way over to buy the bag and he still doesn’t fucking know why-

he looks in the bag and screams.

“WHY DID YOU TAKE- WHAT EVEN IS THAT?”

Tim stares forward blankly, in pure awe at the levels of comedy his little brother is bringing to the table. “It’s a spleen. He’s given me a spleen.”

Damian collapses into a fit of laughter to the point of crying while Dick, horrified, tries not to throw up over the mangled rotting organ Damian had stolen from the illegal-transplant ring. he doesn’t stop laughing for the better part of an hour and Bruce has to talk to Damian about the dangers of messing with case evidence, especially when that evidence is actual human remains.

obviously the question of why Damian thought it would be funny to gift Tim a spleen of all things brings about the knowledge that Tim does not have his original, which Tim is not happy about. the worst part is Tim can’t even be mad at Damian for it because that’s genuinely the funniest fucking joke he’s ever heard of in his life and he’s only pissed off that Damian of all people thought of it before he did.

For real though, I know we were just talking about this last night but she’s such an interesting character

He relationship to her dad

Her relationship with Tim, not just them dating but how close and supportive they are. Tim snuck back into Gotham during no man’s land to be there when she gave birth. He was so nervous to introduce his boyfriend Bernard to Stephanie because her approval was so important to Tim and is a really cute scene

The fact she is the coffee drinker NOT Tim

The fact she was pregnant at 15

The fact her ex ran off leaving her to be a single mom after the earthquake that led to no man’s land

The fact she started a gang war

How hard it was for her to be a vigilante because unlike the rest she didn’t have the training the rest of them. There were multiple Bats that told her to quit

I get things get lost in fandom flanderization but her entire character seems to have been lost

Actually, here’s some context behind her relationship with her dad and why she’s a hero

Her father is Cluemaster, a c list Batman villain that essentially does the riddler’s schtick but its clues not riddles. Like in universe both Batman and the Riddler think of him as bargain bin Riddler. Because of this she does not have a great relationship with her father, especially since he was in and out of prison most of her life. So just that leads to some complicated feelings right off the bat

Her father, “reformed” moves back to Gotham. She finds out he’s still committing crimes just without leaving clues anymore. Which honestly makes him maybe the smartest Gotham villain since he got rid of the aspect of his crimes that got him caught. She decides she needs to stop him, makes a costume, and goes to crime scenes as Spoiler to leave clues what her father’s plan is

That’s right, the name is Spoiler and in Spoiler alert, she was giving spoilers to what her dad’s next crime was going to be

Tim managed to unmask her at one point and she got away by smashing a brick into is face. I just think this is really funny. They date later but the first time Robin meets Stephanie Brown she hits him in the head with a brick

After she worked with Batman and Robin to stop Cluemaster, they came up with a plan and Batman told her to stay back because she’s motivated by revenge

At one point her dad managed to snag her as a hostage and was about to disfigure her with Acid before Batman revealed she was his daughter

She then tried to STRANGLE HER FATHER WITH A CHAIN that was part of his scheme, the chain not the strangling, and Batman had to stop her from killing her dad

Steph put that uniform on to stop her father and discovered a genuine love of being a hero and wanting to help people. It’s why she still does it despite her father not popping up that much. He does every once in a while but she has moved beyond just stopping him

Also, she started dating Robin before she knew he was Tim Drake, which really annoyed her because Tim knew who she was

And that’s just how she got started, that’s before she was Robin, before she caused a gang war, before she DIED

And yet we know her for waffles

Also, why her and Cass are so close? After Batman started training Steph, Cas trained Steph in exchange for reading lessons. They bonded of these lessons and became friends, Cass trained her to fight, Steph helped Cassandra learn how to read.

Oh yeah, context for her death

She was tortured by Black Mask for information about Batman. She managed to escape but died in hospital from her injuries while Bruce stayed by her side

Only for, plot twist, it to be revealed that Dr. Thompkins withheld life saving treatment from her to prove a point to Bruce before fleeing to Africa

Only for, double plot twist, it turned out Steph was alive and recovering with Dr Thompkins in Africa while working as a missionary before returning a year later. Which just saying the double plot twist retroactively takes the punch out of her death and Leslie denying treatment. Idk I’m not entirely a fan of how that was handled. It just seemed a bit unnecessary, like I get this was probably not wanting to retread Jason’s death but everyone thought she was dead, Bruce, Tim, Cass… it’s actually a bit contrived and really just feels done for drama. I just can’t help but see the hand of the author

Okay before you latch onto that, the double plot twist was she didn’t deny Steph that treatment and was fully aware Steph was alive since she was helping her recover in Africa

Doc Thompkins let Bruce think she did

And on Bruce’s part he told her if she ever came back to America she was going to get the full wrath of the legal system for medical malpractice

Series of events that happened

-Steph “died”

-Bruce discovered she should have survived if given a medical treatment

-Leslie Thompkins lied and says she denied the treatment to prove a point

-she didn’t actually and they both were hanging out in Africa for a year while Steph recovered

It’s contrived but it’s not puke emoji worthy

I mean, she didn’t think it was necessary, this is more of a hand of the author, they did this to get the effect of killing Steph without actually having to kill her like they did Jason

This is after Bruce tried making her quit being a vigilante 2, or maybe 3 times. It would be absolutely absurd to put that on Bruce in the context of someone he fired from being Robin

And Steph dying was a consequence of her accidentally starting a gang war

There is a lot you can put on Bruce but this just isn’t one

Doylist explanation was DC came up with an entire contrived scenario to fake Steph’s death, because after Jason’s death in Death in the Family, DC didn’t want to actually murder another child

Because this was out of character for Leslie too, it was written for the drama of having a long time ally be the reason Steph die, then just reveal it was all fake. I’m Sure Doc Thompkins was doing good work in Africa but I find it hard to believe she tanked her career and abandoned her clinic for a year just to make this happen. And for her to feel the need to do this would require her to be oblivious to the fact Bruce tried multiple times to keep Steph from being a vigilante, and when that didn’t work he then gave her proper training so she didn’t die and got the birds of prey to reluctantly mentor Steph

You are definitely coming up with a more nuanced read, but contextually this just doesn’t entirely make sense

Isolated from everything else I see where that came from and it’s hard to give full context in this form, but it was done for drama character be damned

Harvey never tells Jason that Two Face killed Willis, unclear if Willis was actually a bad father or just complicated.

Jason grows up, Two Face and Harvey try to do better for him, don’t want him to join the business but as soon as Bats was aware Harvey had a kid, he became involved.

Which leads to Jason being at the wrong place, at the wrong time, when he gets hit with something and dimension jumps.

When he tries to find his Dads in this other universe, he realizes that Two Face and Harvey don’t recognize him. He wonders if in this world, he’d been found by Bruce first, which was an ongoing joke between Two Face and Bruce. But no, Two Face recognized the name Todd when Jason had asked and said if the man had any more kids he had to flip his coin about he may as well finish the job now.

Some douchebag influencer decides to challenge one of the Waynes to an MMA fight, and he goes with Tim.

Big public announcement, making a big deal of it, mockingly suggesting the Waynes can donate the proceeds to charity, so long as Tim gets in the ring with him, and people are like, Tim? Tim Drake-Wayne, smallest of Bruce Wayne's kids, so baby-faced he looks like a high-schooler even in his early twenties Tim? And there's a huge kerfuffle, people calling the influencer out for going after someone way smaller than him, being a coward by not picking Bruce Wayne or even Dick Grayson, and people egging him on to beat up Bruce's 'girliest' kid and betting Tim will back down and "Daddy Wayne will just bring out the lawyers".

And then Tim says "yeah sure". And yes he DOES set it up so that the proceeds will go to the Neon Knights program, thank you very much, and he doesn't really hype up the fight or seem that worried about it online, and the influencer is talking constant shit and posting videos of him training to get ready to "beat little Timmy's ass", and he keeps trying to goad Tim online but the most he gets in response is Tim going "k".

The day of the fight, the venue is packed, the whole Wayne clan is there to cheer Tim on, medics are on stand-by for when Tim gets badly hurt, and everyone is So Ready for This. And the influencer is a big guy who's in shape, and he's won a few fights already, and Tim looks itty bitty next to him, but also he's a lot more fit than people were expecting? Like he's got more scars than people expected (which was zero) and he's got good muscle tone, and he squares up like an actual fighter, but he's still way smaller than the other guy.

Then the bell rings and Tim wipes the fucking floor with the influencer. He's fast and ruthless, and the influencer gets maybe two hits in before Tim is in his space and climbing him, locking his legs around the guy's neck and throwing him to the ground with his momentum. The fight is fast, which people expected, but it's because Tim hammers the guy and takes him down before he knows what's happening, which people did NOT expect.

Afterwards, people are trying to break down the fight and figure out what the FUCK happened, and one retired MMA fighter admits he pretty much knew it was going to turn out like this.

"Bullshit," the other commentator goes. "Bullshit! How could you have possibly known that Bruce Wayne's kid was a fighter like that?"

"One," the guy says, grinning, "the kid's a Gotham native. Gotham natives fight tooth and nail, even the richer ones. Two, he's said before in interviews that he took self-defense classes as a kid."

"Oh bullshit, plenty of kids take karate classes growing up-"

"Yeah, but 'plenty of kids' don't have a non-meta kid sidekick running around their city. You know how Star City has some of the best youth archery classes in the country? And how that came about after Speedy came on the scene?"

"Oh my god," the other commentator mutters. "Drake's a fucking Robin fanboy, isn't he."

The retired fighter grins wider. "Is he ever. So he's been taking self-defense and martial arts classes from a young age. Then he got taken in by Bruce Wayne, who's first son was raised as a world-class acrobat before Wayne took him in, and since then he's become an Olympic gold medalist for gymnastics, and now he's Tim's big brother.

"And the piece de resistance," the fighter says gleefully, "head of Wayne Enterprises R&D and close personal friend of Bruce Wayne is Lucius Fox, who's daughter briefly dated Tim and who's oldest son is Luke motherfuckin' Fox, one of the best MMA fighters I've ever seen."

"Oh my god," the other man repeats.

"So on top of learning martial arts for years, that's two people directly in Tim's circle who are top-tier athletes, who I'm damn sure wouldn't have let him in that ring without knowing how to handle his shit."

"...So Brad's lucky he made it out of that ring with all his bones intact."

"Damn lucky, even."

A Clark that is sent back in time to the beginning of the Justice League.

These people don’t know him very well and have never dealt with time travel before. He’s not sure whether he’s actually in his timeline or a branch or if he does damage by changing things or trying to let them play out as they did. It’s a whole identity crisis. He doesn’t know if he can live with himself allowing preventable things to happen. Thinks about how much tragedy he could prevent.

And the whole time he’s having this crisis over what to do, he keep accidentally clocking Bruce in a way where Clark literally knows him better than he knows himself.

And it’s psyching Bruce out.

Like, I just want a Clark that goes back in time, knows Bruce better than anyone else ever has or ever will, and cannot stop himself from intuiting his behaviors and thoughts. If they’re making a plan and knows what Bruce is about to point out, he’ll lead with a concession and ask a question. If he can tell Bruce is favoring his left side or has a migraine or it’s Alfred’s birthday, Clark knows and accounts for it. If he knows Barry and Hal are about to start something he steers Bruce in the opposite direction. He calls him B. He makes them both tea after a week long away mission. He sits in the med bay after a particularly harrowing incident and makes sure Bruce’s favorite comfort show is playing softly in the background for him to wake up to. He tries to end non-emergency meetings early on school nights.

He knows this man.

And Bruce has no clue how he’s doing it. He corners J’onn to ask if it’s mind reading. He gets a negative. He tries to ask the ship, but Clark has locked it out of sharing his temporal status under any circumstances. Bruce just, suddenly has someone who is nearly perfect in the eyes of the public, and can seemingly predict his every move.

He starts to test hypotheses. But every time he tries to be unpredictable, or avoid the man, or conduct some sort of test, Clark is seemingly plain old Clark. It’s driving him mad.

Bruce is fucking falling in love with this perfect god teammate he has who happens to have perfect parenting advice for an over active, traumatized, acrobat child and doesn’t know what to do. Clark is agonizing over the ramifications of altering the time line or not doing enough to save people or giving himself away and doesn’t seem to realize that he’s basically turned himself into catnip for the Worlds Greatest Detective.

At least he has fun fucking with Perry over sending him “drafts” that don’t require edits because Clark remembers all of the criticism from the first time around and purposely sends a “rough draft” that won him a Pulitzer just to mess with him.

Batman AU where Bruce isn’t Batman. None of the Wayne’s are superheroes or otherwise, but all the rumors and conspiracy theories about Batman and the Robins and Batgirls and others keep pointing to the Wayne’s who really are just regular people.

Like. Bruce gets the rumors when it’s just him because the Bat tech is so expensive, surely it must be a rich guy. And his accidents (from real honest skiing trips or boating mishaps because Bruce does like to get away and be a little reckless when life gets too stressful) always seem to line up with Batman being out of commission after a big fight. (Bruce left Gotham because there were crazy things happening, he didn’t want to get caught it those crossfires!)

Then he takes in Dick Grayson around the same time Robin appears on the scene. They’re just both so acrobatic.

And things keep piling up, but it really is just coincidental. Meanwhile Batman’s just some guy who’s a tech genius whose been stealing equipment from work at Wayne Enterprises and his son is the first Robin and his nephew who he got custody over for a few years is the second and the first Batgirl was his sons fucking babysitter until she figured out why her services were no longer needed and decided to don a cape instead of calling CPS and the rest are all completely unrelated with their own full lives and families and come from different parts of the city and took up the mantles when they were vacant for too long and he just doesn’t have the leg to stand on to tell them no.

And now sometimes they plan covert trips around known business meetings or vacations their Wayne and adjacent counterpart takes to help spur the theories and keep people from looking the right direction.
