when enkidu dies Gilgamesh covers his face, veiling it “like a bride”. Haha (sudden low voice through gritted teeth) the ancient Mesopotamians are running circles around us. I need you to get your ass on the field and give me your best yaoi or we can kiss these quarter finals goodbye

You can make a movie with where the only white character is a man named Ray Cism whose one line of his 16 seconds of screen time is “I seriously hate women and minorities.” and you’ll find fifty bajillion reader x Ray Cism fanfics and renaissance style drawings of him with a halo of golden light
This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but here it goes anyways. A lot of you are making up people to be mad at.
Let's take sinners for example. There is a white guy with like 2 lines exclusively about hating minorities in this movie. His name is not Ray, it's Bert (I had to look that up on imdb), he is the kkk-vampire and not a single person on earth is writing self-insert fic about this guy. They are writing self-insert fic about the central antagonist, who is also a vampire. Girls like villains, what else is new.
And sure, maybe I am being to literal here, but yelling at people that they are liking a thing in the wrong way is just the fastest way to kill a fandom. The underlying things this post is pointing at are real and they do exist. Societal beauty standards center white people, a lot of (white) people have are harder time sympathising with people of color. But those things are not fandom problems. They are just general problems of living in white supremacist society and they show up in all facets of or society including fandom. But you are not gonna fix them by telling people they are somehow bad for liking the sexy vampire.
I really liked Sinners. But if I look at the top text posts for example 4 out of 10 are wank about how people are problematic or racist for the way they like the movie. And to be completely honest, I think that this atmosphere is also a huge factor in why Sinners fandom is not a big as it could be. Which is really fucking sad.
@ypsilion I can tell by the points you brought up in your post that you have a very surface level understanding of the world, and that you either lack critical thinking skills, or are being willfully ignorant, because YOU feel bad for liking the """sexy vampire""" and because YOU feel called out by this post.
Anyway, I'm not sure if you're white but if you are, I think you should consider deeply how white supremacy has benefited you and hurt others, rather than just accepting it as part of society. I think you need to begin the internal work of questioning why you always latch onto white male characters, even if they are not the main character, or are horribly misogynistic, racist, etc. You should consider how your underlying beliefs or racial prejudices affect your fandom choices or what you find yourself gravitating towards. Ask yourself why you are so deeply programmed with white beauty standards, and how you can grow past that.
This can help you interact with fandom in a more critical way, like the original post is doing, rather than claiming the original post, which calls out racist patterns in fandom, is part of what's killing fandoms...
Lastly, fandom doesn't exist in a vacuum, nothing does. White supremacy does in fact inform your opinions and thoughts, as it does to us all. As an adult, it's your job to begin deconstructing these ideas in order to truly push back against it.

when I was a kid I tried writing a story about a pegasus that hatched from an egg. a girl found it and brought it to her house, and the line that follows is now permanently stuck in my head. because the pegasus was brand new, right? just born? experiencing the world with pussy fresh eyes? so when it saw the windows of her house, it said "what the heck, it's as though transparent lakes have somehow been shaped into rectangles and firmed up to make the rectangles solid."
and after writing that line, I just shut down Microsoft word in disgust and walked away and did something else for a while. never touched that story again, because jesus christ.
