joining the war on kids reading any book they want on the side of kids reading any book they want. simply you will be fine. it's even good to be confronted with things you don't understand and even find upsetting, uncomfortable and difficult. it's a surprise tool that will help you later.
literally ok so not a funny story but kind of funny? when I was nine I encountered rape in a book and I was like hey mom what’s this mean and she explained it and I was like oh. gross. and then like two weeks later a girl on the bus abruptly disclosed her csa and we were all like ????? what ???? but I was like wait hang on there’s a word for that ☝️🤓 and explained what it meant and that it was illegal and that you could talk to a teacher or my mom if it had happened to you and everyone was like ohhhhh I see I see and very somberly comforted the girl (she was safe she was removed from her home and living with my neighbor at the time so it wasn’t Urgent)
the state of Tennessee is now requiring all "women" have at least 1 child. a woman's sterilization surgery was canceled because she hadn't had 1 child yet. are transmascs allowed to talk about reproductive oppression now? are we allowed to talk about literally any of our problems yet?
Seconding this. Used that list and cross-referenced it with my insurance, found a doctor who did an amazing job taking out the whole kit and kaboodle with minimal pain and minimal scarring.
I've had a (partial, technically) hysterectomy since 2022. it was the best decision I've ever made and I will stand 10 toes down on that. nothing has had a more meaningful impact on my quality of life than that singular surgery. getting that thing out of my body single-handedly added years to my lifespan via sheer stress reduction alone.

I did so much research prior to getting it done (...I wanted to make an informed decision), but a lot of people aren't even aware that different options exist. or they're only aware of some of the aspects, but not others.
for instance, did you know that you can negotiate where you want your incisions to be?
I specifically didn't want a scar along the "bikini line" because it reminded me too much of a c-section scar and that would be dysphoric for me, so my surgeon and I had a conversation and we decided to just extend the belly button incision a bit instead (because they still have to pull your uterus out of the body somehow and I was keeping my cervix, so we couldn't go out through the vagina like you'd usually do).
there's a massive amount of anti-hysterectomy disinformation on the internet, spread by various anti-abortion pro-forced-birther groups specifically to scare people out of getting sterilized in any way (they're typically the same groups spreading a lot of the anti-IUD disinformation as well). if you ever see something talking about how your spine will slowly collapse into your body or whatever..... that's where that comes from lol. same about anyone fearmongering about pelvic organ prolapse.*
*your biggest risk factor for pelvic organ prolapse (which, by the way, is not the worst thing that can happen to somebody. yeah you don't want it to happen, but things like old age and lifting heavy weights can cause it. we've got techniques for attaching your organs back into your body. you'll be fine. it really isn't the end of the world, I promise you) is giving birth. most people who get hystos are pericis women who have already had children. most studies that have looked at this have stated this skew in the data, since it's hard to tell what confounding variables are impacting the results. as far as we can currently tell, if you have not had any kids, you probably aren't putting yourself at a massively greater risk of prolapse, if any at all.**
**there are some theories that the reason we see higher rates of prolapse post-hysto in parous individuals could be due to structural changes in those pelvic muscles and tissues after birth, making them less resilient to further changes (like removing an organ), whereas somebody who is nulliparous with full structural support intact may be able to handle a hysto without much of an issue. like a jenga tower. imagine the tower has already had a bunch of blocks taken out of the bottom of it, and now you're taking another block out. it's more likely to fall, compared to if you were taking a block out of a tower that was fully intact with no blocks removed yet.
(also I'm not trying to body shame with any of the above notes about structural integrity. it's just a medical fact that giving birth does damage to your body, especially your pelvic floor. human beings (and any other creature tbh) were evolutionarily pressured for offspring and parents to survive childbirth. whether or not we had permanent non-lethal health problems was just not part of the darwinian equation, there. you can survive with a fucked up pelvic floor. as long as it doesn't kill you and your offspring can survive to reproduce (& especially if you survive to have even more kids), that's 99% of what evolution really selects for. the human spine is a structural mess that's prone to issues. those issues make you miserable, but rarely kill you or prevent you from reproducing. so it just... doesn't get selected out of the population. there's a lot of shaming around the bodies of people who give birth and I just want you to know that being disabled is not a moral flaw. having a body that has been ravaged by a baby is not a moral flaw. having a pelvic floor that has been torn to shreds from a 3rd degree tear is not a moral flaw. but it's still a factual reality that having kids f u c k s up your body, health-wise, in many ways. also fuck anyone who turns it into an aesthetics or beauty thing. I'm aware there's that whole aspect of social pressures, and that that's why people get so touchy about admitting that having kids fucked up their body, because they associate "fucking up your body" as being an appearance thing. and like. no. i mean that in a health way. you pushed a baby out of a very small space and tore through your own muscles. that causes permanent damage! that is a type of fucking up of your body! it doesn't have to be visual! aaaaaaa)
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
