Talons of power redraw

I was disappointed by this graphic novel page in particular because it didn't at all feel like the novel scene to me (I really like that scene for some reason), and was just overall confusing to look at, so I redrew it with the lighting and vibe I imagined while reading it.

I decided to include my aquatic language headcanon just to add something to it. Basically that aquatic works like morse code: you can spell out any word with any glowscale, but which ones used (or what area of the bidy they're on) add context so that seawings can mostly speak in shorthand. I might make a post about that but I'm still working out some details.

Took me a bit to finish these with school back. I'm slowly trying to get through every tribes architecture and then move on to other worldbuilding stuff.

What if... Colorpoint Burn?

I know drawing Burn with darker colors than her sisters is considered problematic, in some parts of the WoF fandom (And this has been going on for years, it's not a recent trend)

So I propose a compromise

What if Burn was named that due to her having acromelanism (condition that causes the extremities to have a darker pigmentation), making her look somewhat... burnt. But besides her snout, legs and tail, she looks like an average SandWing.

(And I KNOW colorpoint animals are born full white but since these are dragons I choose to think it works differently)

hi!! i just found your blog and i would LOVE to hear about your tribe headcanons, esp. rainwings!! sorry to bother :)

I'm working on tribe designs right now that I hope to post with tribe headcanons, I kinda have artblock right now, but here's a small headcanon with a doodle!

Rainwings have the longest tongue of all the pyrrhian tribes (Nightwings and sandwings get close), and are the only tribe that can lick their own eyes (like a gecko). Dragons from other tribes find this disturbing and horrible, and doing it doesn't usually serve a functional purpose because Rainwings have both eyelids and nictitating membranes like every other tribe.

I draw it kinda snake-like, but I actually think they use their tongues more like a Kinkajou: to drink nectar, which is also part of their fruit propagation (pollinating).

Gloryyy

I wanted to give glory somewhat muted purple colors because of her time under the mountain, and also because I don't like that she's usually drawn with the same colors as the original cover in most of her depictions.

I hope to go over it in a series of tribe-headcanon posts, but I think that Rainwings would all hatch greenish and have an individual theme to their colors/patterns that develops as they grow and use certain colors/patterns more than others, but that would still be malleable to the Rainwings' mood and surroundings in the moment

I might change this up and add some more green hues because I plan to redraw it with a background and stuff sometime. I thought a flower crown might be nice, something that Tamarin or Kinkajou made for her.

Uhh, canon critical ramble

As a side note, I really don't like that she ended up queen, and I especially didn't like that she ended up being related to royalty. It felt like it cheapened the moral. It's weird that an inexperienced outsider with no understanding of the tribe's culture or the everyday life of most dragons took control of not just one, but two tribes.

Despite the way their culture is weirdly demeaned in the books (as lazy and apathetic) they're kinda the happiest and most functional tribe. Their society obviously works on the basis of community cooperation and it feels cheap that their leadership is depicted as apathetic by the books. It looks like a thrown in plot-convenient reason for glory to take over and replace their unique system with the same monarchy that every other tribe in canon has, when that obviously isn't making the other tribes happier or more functional.

I wouldn't mind if she was like this and did that to showcase a moral, Glory is obviously traumatized and brainwashed by the abuse the got from the guardians, making her project her insecurities onto the Rainwing tribe, and we're seeing things through her lens. But despite all that potential for an introspective moment, it doesn't seem to be written that way so far.

Not to rain on your parade, but the rainwing society was definitely not functional. Like I get your point but the problems were easily apparent; the queens just let dragons get kidnapped, they used the tribe resources frivolously, and their apathetic attitude toward everything would’ve gotten them all killed.

Anyways, I think you missed my point, because what I meant by what I said was that the queens were written in a sabotaged way for plot convenience. As a way to make the tribe backwards and helpless enough that Glory just has to step in and make things right, even though that doesn't really make sense.

Of course I'm not saying they're perfect, but the Rainwing tribe also is still more functional than the other tribes regardless. Rainwings are consistently more happy, healthy, and peaceful than any other tribe. Rainwings get kidnapped in the books, which is bad, but other tribes lose hundreds of dragons from battle, starvation, illness, injury, even fights among themselves.

The only tribes I could see doing somewhat well in comparison is seawings, *maybe* icewings, because they have home bases that are hard for enemies to access. Those still have more internal problems than Rainwings do, which lead to rampant unnecessary suffering and death

I really liked the idea of speartip tails, but also I like keeping my fan designs at least mostly canon-esque so I made it into a sort of jewelry instead and I like it. I think if I ever redraw this again I'll make her claws also capped with gold

I hope to eventually start posting headcanon and theory stuff, because I have quite a bit, but post terror is holding me back for now, lol. Here's an OC

Sarco is a nightwing/Rainwing hybrid. His mother is a Nightwing who had a secret relationship with a Rainwing, but she raised him on the island and no one could tell he was a hybrid. He's just abnormally small, has weirdly long canine teeth that poke out, and his ears turn bright red if he's agitated, which he is most of the time.

He's kinda a nasty little gremlin who would continue the tradition of biting prey so it dies and then tracking it down later even after the Nightwings leave the island and live in the rainforest. Especially since he's smaller than usual and he has a harder time fighting stuff/taking down prey, which would probably be mostly monkeys (and "eating fruit is for Rainwings")

He's based on tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus)
