recently, i've been a bit frustrated with how scattered different system tools are, so i decided to do something about it! enter daffodil, a one-stop repository full of system tools, resources, websites and apps designed specifically with systems in mind.
daffodil is vouch-based, meaning it relies on YOU the community to vouch for the different apps and websites i introduce on the site! i've gone ahead and added my own favorite tools as well as common community applications as the first couple entries. in the future, you can suggest resources to be added and reviews of preexisting applications, along with credit if you want it!
this post will be edited with more projects, information, and news as development goes on :]
current tags:
#changelog - site changes
#answered - answered asks (not reviews or suggestions)
#suggestion - answered suggestions for resources to add to the site
#review - review submissions
#misc - miscellaneous
please support the development of daffodil here! thank you!
daffodil has not recieved any submissions in some time, and I have been too busy to test tools myself. in addition, i graduated high school, meaning i had to turn in my school laptop; i have one at home, but i have yet to set up a development environment for daffodil on my home machine.
so yes, i am okay; simply an unintentional hiatus!
Hey, is the text supposed to be that small...? Some of it is big/normally-sized, but most of it is small. Is it just my phone glitching or is there something wrong with the site? It wasn't like this before. /lh
hi, thank you for the report!
i did change something with the size of the main text (using 1vw, which scales with the size of the screen)! this change has been remedied to be more user friendly.
let me know if it's still giving you trouble!
(as a side note, i was aware that the sidebar looks like that on mobile devices, but it's bothering me more and more... i am currently learning javascript so i can change the website's display options based on the browser / device used :])
hello everyone! this is my formal explanation as to why I believe pluralswitch was at least partially generated with AI and therefore receiving a formal disclaimer on daffodil.
the first thing you will notice when you open up pluralswitch's website is that it looks vibe coded. it follows all of the current trends for web design and development and is "sleek and modern", as is most of the modern web.
however, the UI doesn't make much sense. the thing that made me initially suspicious was this random textbox above the title that seemed to serve no purpose.
"premium plural tools" does not generate any meaningful results on google, and "get started for free" makes no sense as it implies a premium tier (which, to pluralswitch's credit, has not been implemented!)
There is also no metadata description for the site, which is hard for a real dev to miss; to be fair, i believe daffodil doesn't have a description either, but it's still suspicious.
The code of Plural Switch's homepage is... messy. First of all, a grand majority of the styling is done within HTML itself, which is a big no-no in site development; it's possible, but it clogs up your code. All devs worth their salt will link a CSS stylesheet rather than doing the styling within HTML.
The box model provided is also strange, as it implies that the right margin is manually set to -186 px. This is a VERY strange way to center an element, and is again indicative of an inexperienced programmer (or prompter).
Finally, glancing into the console very quickly lets you know that the app was built on FIrebase, but is failing to access it (another flaw indicative of an inexperienced programmer).
Which:
To be entirely fair, I have never used Firebase. It is built on Visual Studio Code, which I do use (without the optional AI features), as does every dev. However, Firebase seems much more involved with AI and AI features.
All in all, be careful using PluralSwitch! I will keep it on the site for now, but the AI disclaimer will be reworded to link to this post.
(a section here about a mod and the dev referring to themselves (dev) as a "coder" has been removed upon request, as the mod's first language isn't English and wasn't aware of the distinction! that's entirely my bad :])
a quick glance at pluralswitch's codebase has confirmed for me that the project was almost definitely made with AI, and pluralswitch will soon receive a more formal AI disclaimer once i type up an explanation on why i believe the project to be AI-generated.
please do not send hate to pluralswitch's devs in the meantime! it is entirely possible i could be wrong, but i would like to lay out my case for review from more experienced devs first :]
hello all, and thank you for your interest in daffodil!
i would like to gently point out that you can support the project via buy me a coffee! please do not mind the domain, it was made by a fictive years ago and has been repurposed multiple times.
maintaining this site has been an absolute joy for the first couple days it's been up! however, i am a physically disabled student who does not have the bandwidth to work an ordinary entry-level job, and thus i do not have the money to support daffodil out of my own pocket. your contribution will go towards:
a neocities supporter subscription for more bandwidth and storage (5$ a month)
hiring freelance developers to work on the site and fill in the gaps where my knowledge isn't enough (varying prices, will likely happen via fiverr or similar)
my own education in software development and computer science, helping me apply more advanced concepts to the site (also varies! computer science is an expensive field!)
eventually, a custom domain name and hosting service off of neocities! neocities is lovely but not quite what i'm looking for (around 20$ a year to register the domains i'm looking at)
thank you for reading and considering daffodil! again, you can support me through buy me a coffee!
personally a huge fan of PluralSwitch, though it’s web only and not available as an app. But it has friend options, profiles for non-systems (so raft they can friend you as well), a bunch of customization and a good way to keep track of parts + front. It recently got out of beta I’m pretty sure, and so far I’m really liking the simplicity of the webapp. Maybe a good addition?
thank you for the contribution! pluralswitch has been added here!
as an aside, i have my suspicions about pluralswitch being potentially coded with AI. however, the dev denies this, so i will keep it up for now!
thinking of biting the bullet and just adopting a wiki framework for daffodil... my only concern is moderation, since system spaces are often raided or overtaken by discourse. most wikis operate on an IP level for moderation afaik, similar to the anonymous chatbox on my personal site. i wouldn't do anything with any system's IPs, but it would be a privacy concern if anyone managed to get access to that information
BIG fan of ampersand tbh!! The newer updates of the app is really lovely, didn't have any problems transferring data from simply plural, nice ease of use, plenty of functions, lots of customization, i only wish it was able to display images with markdown, but that's not a big deal!! Overall 9/10 app, i adore it LOL
thank you for the contribution! ampersand is now posted as a part of this site change!
making the website more responsive for mobile devices
adding a css reset stylesheet to normalize styling across browsers
testing across multiple browsers and devices
in the meantime, please feel free to send reviews or suggestions of your favorite (or least favorite!) multiplicity / plurality tools to add in our askbox! you can now send them on anon :]
Would you be able to make the text on the site a bit darker? It's kinda hard to read. /lh
Wasn't Lighthouse locked to make it unable for new users to register, or did they change that already? (Heard it from other plurals)
yes! the text of the headings has been briefly switched to black so everyone can read the site while i workshop a more accessible color scheme.
lighthouse was, as far as i understand, briefly locked down due to a long-standing bug that made it impossible to log into your account on certain devices. i'm fairly certain this is remedied now, but if you're having issues, there is always the github or the discord!
(just a note: lighthouse is pro-endo, and so the discord server has systems of all origins-- though there is a strict "no syscourse" policy that keeps things comfortable for everyone! if you don't want to join the discord for that reason, there is a tumblr blog here.)
pluralspace has been removed from the list of projects due to this post confirming the project was made "in part" with AI!
in other news, accessibility concerns have been raised for the site. i am currently investigating them, never fear! please feel free to drop the issues you have been having in the askbox.
