And if you add a dark wig to that, you create a lot more contrast:

Contrast is great when you want to make a character stand out and look very striking on film.

Contrast is also used to make characters look more otherworldly or even villain-like (see: Frodo, Arwen, Grima, Elrond, Saruman, Denethor). Aragorn is a king descended from the ancient people of Numenor raised in Rivendell. He's very aware of this throughout the movie. He doesn't advertise it.

So the addition of DIRT humanizes Aragorn. Literally by visually lowering his contrast.

And the reason that looks more attractive is because it goes against our expectations—despite being Aragorn, despite being a king, he's still Strider. It's a visual declaration of his values.
