A couple scenes from a little gay vampire story I was kicking around a couple years ago! I sometimes do little pencils-only scenes for things and never post them. But I was looking back at these and was like why not? They're cute!

I have a whole story for these two, but just for funsies, something to do every now and then when I need to let loose.

Ran the first session of DIE on Monday and I might already call it my favourite TTRPG. It's undoubtedly too soon to say it properly but that was the best session 1 I've ever had and I already want to run it for every other RPG group I play with.

book discussion: the prose midway through was a bit sloppy, and I didn't like it

weird response: if you rewrite that part yourself it's actually a flawless book!

movie discussion: one of the actors was blatantly half-assing his entire role.

weird response: if you film yourself doing all his parts and then edit it all into the movie, the performance is exactly as you want it to be!

video game discussion: the gameplay is completely unbalanced and I've had multiple crashes to desktop

normal response: there's mod packs for that but they really should've done a better job, yeah

weird response: if you mod it yourself, you can fix these issues. learn how the game works at a fundamental level just to have a functional game.

ttrpg discussion: the game's rules are sloppily written and there are severe issues with characters' abilities rendering some options completely unuseable.

a completely normalized response for some reason: the game is actually fine if you just make up new rules as you go along and ignore half the rulebook.

I wish I loved Lancer, because there's so much to like. I adore the setting and the way it blends hard and soft sci-fi concepts and makes that dissonance so central. I love the focus on interhuman politics and how it refuses to add any aliens to make you focus on the ramification of mech combat. I love the factions and the tone. I love the different mech kinds and the mix-and-match way of building them. I love (most of) the prewritten modules! No Room for a Wallflower genuinely made me cry the first time I read it. It's the kind of game I'd love to tell stories in.

I just wish I enjoyed running it.

I really don't enjoy tactical combat in TTRPGs. My favourite parts of TTRPGs are the roleplaying and the storytelling, so I prefer it when combat is something resolved in minutes rather than hours and when there's room for player creativity and more freewheeling action. And beyond that preference, I found drawing out battle maps and actually running these three-hour combats made me so stressed and anxious to the point where I wasn't enjoying my Lancer sessions. Maybe I was just running a bad prewritten module but unfortunately Lancer is just not a game for me which is a shame because it does so much I love narratively! Just not mechanically.

I might be willing to run it again, maybe Wallflower, Siren's Song, a Mountain's Remorse, or Shadow of the Wolf as they have or can be modified to have a bigger focus on roleplaying (or a homebrew campaign), but I've got over a dozen TTRPG systems in my to-run pile so I'll update y'all in a few years.
