I feel like The West Wing discourse is stuck in the early 2000s, because in 2021 we should be able to appreciate that Donna is just as strong and well-rounded a female character as CJ, and I rarely ever see anyone acknowledge that when naming their favorite characters.

Donna:

1) had the courage to leave a terrible relationship

2) had the audacity to walk into a presidential campaign and demand a job without a degree or qualifications

3) had the intelligence to keep up with and often cover work for her Ivy League educated boss

4) had the strength to put her feelings aside for the betterment of the presidency and her own career, even when it hurt her

5) had the courage (eventually) to recognize that she had to move on, quitting even though she knew it hurt the man she loved

6) was hardworking and smart enough to get herself hired as the Chief of Staff to the First Lady even without help from her previous boss

7) finally laid it all out there for said previous boss, told him it was time to decide what he wanted, and got her happily ever after.

The events that unfolded over the past 24 hours in Atlanta were not isolated incidents. Hate crimes against Asian Americans have increased nearly 150% in the US in the last year. 

Last June, in the wake up of yet another uprising in hate crimes committed by white supremacists, we released the following statement:

White supremacists, Nazis, and other purveyors of hate can fully fuck off. They are not welcome here.

These words are as true today as they were then. We stand with the Asian American community. If you see hate speech on Tumblr, please report it. That shit is not tolerated here.

i just read a washington post article on romcoms aging poorly due to the pushiness (and oft-stalkery conduct) of the male characters therein, and it got me thinking about pride and prejudice, and specifically darcy saying, “one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”

because, like, that’s the seldom-portrayed romantic dream in the patriarchal hellscape that is our world, isn’t it?

a dude being willing to say, “i understand if you don’t feel the same way about me, and i’ll leave you alone forever about this if my attention is unwanted.”

so simple, yet so wonderful in its basic human decency

Note also: Elizabeth turns down Darcy’s first proposal, and in the process, accuses him of doing some stuff he did not do (and also some stuff he totally did).

The next day, he surprises her on her walk. He hands her a letter, asks that she read it, and then takes off.

When this happened to me after I had turned someone down IN REAL LIFE, the letter contained a passionate argument to the tune of “actually you’re wrong and you do like me and you should go out with me” and it was creepy af.

Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth starts with: “Be not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter, by the apprehension of its containing any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers, which were last night so disgusting to you”. He goes on to set the record straight about the stuff he didn’t do (as well as the stuff he did) which is *actually relevant* to Elizabeth. And he, as promised, doesn’t romance her further.

It’s totally bizarre that even now, this can be considered unusually great dude behaviour.

His whole arc in the book is about learning to consider other people’s feelings and not just his own, but the fact that it’s expressed via who gets to talk and who is told to shut up is so, so telling. The first time around, he imposes his voice on her whether she wants it or not. The second time, he asks how she feels, and in exchange, offers her the gift of his silence.

And yeah, the fact that dudes still! have! not! learned! this! lesson! is exhausting.

hey just a heads up/warning for those of you who don’t do well dealing with the heavy subjects or videos portraying violent acts, sandyhook promise has a new gun violence school shooting PSA that is probably going to be going viral and is slated to play on television and in AMC movie theaters and it’s pretty heavy, especially at the end. Hey can you shut up actually? No one is saying age-gap relationships aren't consensual, or that adult women aren't capable of consenting relationships with older men. What we are saying is:

Relationships w/ an age difference typically come with a power imbalance in favor of the older partner

Men know this and culturally have always taken advantage of this

A forty-something-year-old dating a younger woman is not automatically creepy.

A forty-something-year-old who has a dating history consistently consisting of only women under 25 is in fact automatically creepy. Why is the age difference so important to him? Why is having a younger, less mature, less experienced partner so important to the point he prioritizes it above all else?

The fact this is an enormously famous and powerful celebrity (whose romantic partners will automatically have much less social, professional, and financial capital than him, no matter their age) makes this 20x creepier actually.

No one said anything about his partners' choices or ability to consent. Literally the only person's behavior in question here is the older man's. That response is classic deflection.

Refusing to examine this behavior in celebrities and powerful men is how we got shitty predatory hollywood culture in the first place. So maybe shut up.
