1703. Febr. - den 11ten Thüringer Wald. - Gräfenthal - Saalfeld - den 12. Die Durchl. Reysende wollten auch hier incognito seyn, giengen dahero gleich folgenden Tag frühe weiter, weilen Sie noch vor Abend den beschwehrlichen, und zumalen bey so kalter Winters-Zeit so verdrießlich-als gefährlichen Thüringer-Wald gerne zurück legen wollten. Diesen erlangten Sie bald, nemlich eine Meile von Judenbach, woselbsten die Coburgische Post. abwechselt. Hier bekame man Bauren-Vorspanen, mit welchen man so viel möglich durch continuirliche Berge und Thäler in dem Wald forteilete. Es ist gewiß, daß hiesige Bauren ihre Pferde nicht schonen, sondern die Passagiers mit ihrem häuffigen Antreiben und tapfferen Zufahren vor vielen andern ordentlichen Posten contentiren, auch meistens selbst mit ihren Pferden postmäßig fortlauffen, mithin bey dasigen gefährlichen Bergen und rauhen Holtz-Wegen treffliche Handreichung thun, wie Sie dann auch damals durch den tieffen Schnee sehr wohl zu statten kamen. Mitten in dem Wald mußte man ein Wacht-Hauß bey einem sehr engen Weg passiren, woselbst, als an der Coburgisch-Saalfeldisch- und Bayreuthischen Gräntze, die Reysende angehalten und befragt werden, doch ist das Examen sehr modest, und so trotzig, wie an vielen Orten, dardurch die Passagiers öffters nicht wenig incommodirt werden. Die Lust in diesem Wald zu fahren war sehr gering, dahero man sich erfreute, wann man eines Orts, da lebendige und vernünfftige Creaturen zu sehen waren, ansichtig wurde, wie dann die Printzen sehr vergnügt waren, da Sie das Saalfeldische in dem Wald ligende Städtgen Gräffenthal erreichten, und seine Commodität so lange da genossen, biß dasige Post die nöthige Vorspan verschaffte, darauf Sie dieses bergichte Städtgen verliessen, und immer von einem Berg zu dem andern, und nach Saalfeld, als dem Ende des Waldes eileten, woselbsten Sie, nachdem der gantze Tag in diesem verdrießlichen Wald zugebracht worden, bey anbrechender Nacht ankamen. Man konte sich in die Gelegenheit allhier sehr wohl und leicht schicken, bediente sich auch deren nach Nothdurfft, und nahme den folgenden Tag längst des Flusses Sala, welcher dieser Stadt, an deren Feld er vorbey fliesset, den Namen gegeben, Rudelstadt, der Fürstl. Schwarzburgischen Residence vorbey, durch Alstett den Weg in das Gothische, und so nach Jena.

1703. Febr. - 11th Thuringian Forest. - Gräfenthal - Saalfeld - 12th.

The Serene Travellers wanted to be incognito here too, therefore continued immediately early the next day, because they wanted to gladly leave behind before evening the difficult and particularly at so cold a winter time the glum as well as dangerous Thuringian forest. It they soon reached, that is to say a mile from Judenbach, whereat the Coburgian post changes. Here one got peasant front teams, with which one speeded as much as possible through continuing mountains and valleys in the forest. It is sure that the local peasants don’t spare their horses, but content their passengers with their frequent hieing and brave driving before many other proper posts, mostly run with their horses postally too, thus help splendidly with the dangerous mountains and rough logging paths there, as They then got through very well through the deep snow at the time. In the middle of the forest one had to pass a guard house at a very narrow road, whereat as at the Coburg-Saalfeldian and Bayreuthian borders the travellers are halted and questioned, but the examination is very modest and insolent as in many places the passengers are often not little incommodated through it. The enthusiasm to drive through this forest was very low, therefore one was joyed when one caught sight of a place, where living and reasonable creatures can be seen, as then the Princes were very merry when they reached the Saalfeldian little town Gräfenthal situated in the forest and enjoyed its commodity there for so long until the local post had procured the needed front team, thereupon they left this mountainous little town, and rushied always from one mountain to the next and towards Saalfeld as the end of the forest, whereat They, after the whole day had been spent in this glum forest, arrived at nightfall. One could very well and easily take up residence here, and made use of them as necessary, and took the road the following day along the river Sala, which gave this town, at which field it flows past, its name, past Rudolstadt, the Princely Schwarzburgian residence, through Allstedt into the Gothian domain, and thus to Jena.
