Chapter 7: In which Logan is a concerned parent, Virgil deserves a break and Roman doesn’t know what’s going on

“So.. you’re saying your brother” Logan pointed at Virgil “tried to burn down his school and YOUR brother” he pointed at Thomas now “Was somehow involved”

“Yep, pretty much” Thomas said before worriedly adding “I can’t believe Remy did this! He’s such a good kid. He’s never gotten in trouble at school before”

(Probably because Remy had been homeschooled for his whole life but Thomas ignored that part)

Logan was dumbfounded. So the story was true? Two kids had tried to burn down their school. At least one fo them seemed to be innocent (or so his brother said). As for Virgil’s brother......

“You don’t seem as eager to protect your brother’s reputation” Logan said, turning to look at Virgil analytically.

Virgil, for his part, looked tired. So extremely tired. It made Logan wonder what his family was like, if he just seemed ‘done’ as Roman would say.

“Remus is like that sometimes” he said with a small shrug.

If Logan were anyone else, he would have been openly gaping at Virgil. But Logan was Logan, so the man’s eyes twitched and widened a little.

Roman, who was by now a master at Logan- reading, did gape. Logan’s eyes twiching AND widening was a sign of ultimate concern.

Virgil just looked confused at Roman’s gaping. He passed it off as some weird Berry family ritual.

“So you’re saying it’s a normal occurrence for your brother to do this?” Logan asked slowly

“I mean, I guess?” Virgil said “He tried to stuff his face with 10 marshmallows like yesterday so it’s nothing new”

“I feel like marshmallows and fires are two very different things, Virgil” Logan said slowly

Once again, Virgil just shrugged.

“What sort of kid does that!” Roman said, finally catching up.

“The sort of kid that threatened to steal your bike” Virgil mumbled, not loud enough for anyone to hear.

(Except Thomas, who began chocking from laughter.)

“What?” Roman asked dumfounded

“What?” Virgil responded, innocently “i didn’t say anything, Princey”

“Just that you got terrorized by an 8 year old” he mumbled again.

Again, another chocked noise came from Thomas.

Roman sighed dramatically

Logan was still processing what he just heard. Virgil’s brother... tried to burn down his own school. And Virgil acted as if that was something that happened all the time. Was that another teenager thing? Acting like you think something is normal so people think it isn’t that big of a deal?

If it was, then Logan was impressed at Virgil’s acting skills.

If it wasn’t... Logan was gonna have a talk with Virgil’s dad, who was hopefully a reasonable, calm, parental figure who would agree that this was not normal.

If only Logan had known that was NOT the case.
