This is a my favorite photograph which I took with a matchbox, pinhole camera. It is one photograph of a series of four photographs taken of different styles of shoes. The title of this series is “Good Shoes Take You Good Places.” The goal of these images is to demonstrate the sentimental value correlated to a pair of shoes, while also paying close attention to aesthetic elements of photography. In this image, there are many elements of art to be noted. First, I really like how the shoes are positioned in the center; the subject takes up the majority of the photograph’s space. The image is given a feeling of stability as the subject is symmetrically balanced with the area defined by the photograph. Value plays an important role in this image as it highlights the light and dark colors. Contrast is created between the brighter whites and the darker blacks. The highlighted lighter whites surrounding the shoes give the subject a unique glow. This draws the viewers attention directly to the subject of the image. The elements of texture and form primarily contribute to the image’s illusion of a three-dimensional object. The texture of the shoes gives the image a softer appearance. It makes the viewer feel calm. I also love how unity is achieved in this image through the repetition of physical designs on the shoe. The stitching along the edges, the fringes, and the bows create this sense. Additionally, there are artistic elements in the background of the image which help to create a cohesive photograph. There exists contrasts in the horizontal and vertical lines created by the outlines of the bricks. Also, the two-dimensional, rectangular shape of the bricks gives the background interest. All together, there are many aspects of this image which, together, create a unitary photograph.
