Otto thinks Alicent looks so much like his beloved dead wife, he instructs her to put on one of said dead wife's dresses before sending her to "comfort" (= hopefully seduce for the family's political gain) a man who could literally be her father because he has a daughter her own age. After that, he spends years manipulating her like a puppet while acting like some sort of surrogate husband (+ father figure to her children) when her actual husband is too sick to play his role. Also, the one time Alicent loses her shit and attacks someone in a blind rage, he thinks that's hot… er, I mean, admirable and a sign she's finally becoming as ruthless as him, of course.
Can I say he has an Agamemnon complex. Am I allowed to say that. He lives in a deeply patriarchal society where everyone's ambition is to have a son. Not him tho he doesn't really care for his male children the way he cares about her. In his own fucked up way. He doesn't comfort her or even attempt to, but instead he sees that she marries a king and becomes mother of kings and she's an extension of him and his power and she later treats her son how he treated her and she's also an extension of her dead mother. Also when her grandson aka his great grandson died he refered to him as their grandson
Aemond saying he’s relieving Alicent from her duty on the council because he has to get rid of his mother in order to feel in control and Criston saying that he’s trying to spare her from the horrors of war because he’s trying to uphold the image of a perfect white knight savior and Otto shutting down her attempt to talk about her ‘sin’ because he genuinely cannot have her exposing her fears and insecurities…………….. Alicent, you are surrounded by them.
