I know I don't post anything about Oliver Twist anymore (but I was once known as gaydickensianpickpockets and in fact named myself Charley after Charley Bates and It's always going to have a place in my hear) BUT I've just started reading Fagin The Thief by Allison Epstein and it's absolutely brilliant and the attention to detail is so refreshing especially after so many modern Oliver Twist retellings miss things out. It's incredible so far especially as I'm such an Dickens purist when it comes to Oliver Twist. Shades of Wicked in terms of villain-backstory-retellings. I 100% recommend!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Set in a fictionalized 1812 Russia, this is a tale that perfectly blends folklore with reality, making you question which is which as the story unfolds. Told through three perspectives - Felix (the grand duke) Sasha (an imperial soldier) Marya (a revolutionary) - this story blends together all sides of the unrest stirring in Russia after the war with Napoleon and the choices each person makes leading to the ending. Each is helped by the enigmatic Sofia to achieve their goals, yet as the novel unfolds, we remain unsure who (or what) she is, where exactly her loyalties lie. Does she wish to help the revolution for a better Russia for the people, or to simply watch it burn to the ground? This story was a beautiful take on Russian history and made you truly feel like you were living in these times with these people. The stakes slowly rise as the novel continues, until eventually you are unable to see how this can end without bloodshed.
