tragic when you read fic where the prose is so good, but then the characterization is just ... off. though, the pattern i've noticed is that it's often writers who are prolific and write for a boatload of different fandoms and at a certain point you figure out the Tropes they are into and how they are just sort of interchangeably applied to whatever it is they are writing for

#almost every time #not the arbiter of correct characterization though but sometimes there are details that very much contradict canon(tm) and #either the author didn't notice because engagement with the source isn't that deep or it's deliberate in order to conform to preferences #esp frustrating when the original themes are played with but the character work is superficial or even nonsensical
