Ice Ice Baby Generations of people have become used to living with snow and have adapted their clothing to cope. The Inuit, Yupik and other Arctic peoples have been making and wearing extremely primitive but nonetheless effective pieces of eye protection for thousands of years. These snow goggles are fashioned out of whatever material the remote Arctic offers. Driftwood, animal bones, walrus ivory and caribou antlers are the most obvious choices. But snow goggles made from seashore grasses have also been discovered. The Inuits and Yupik and the Chukchi people made goggles of bone, including whalebone, along with ivory from extinct mammoths, antler and wood. Walrus teeth, whalebone or leather as well as wood, bark and hair - these softer materials were used especially in the deep winter cold, being kinder to the facial skin. Sometimes the surface of goggles were painted black to provide more protection from the sun. Both a stark necessity and a facial fashion statement. The goggles are carved to fit the wearer’s face, with a large groove cut in the bottom where it can rest on the bridge of the nose. A pair of headband straps made from walrus hide or caribou sinew holds the goggles in place tightly against the face. A narrow horizontal slit cut along the length of the goggles and siting directly in front of the eye reduces the amount of light that enters and thus cuts down the glare from the snow. Found a nearly complete m.ule d.eer skeleton! It was missing one of its front legs and it’s lower jaws. I took the skull, the one scapula we could find, and a few leg bones to clean up. This will be my first ever full skull I found on my own!
