Originally had the confortable family of a middle class family in Vladivostok, until her father, who was a merchant, died, and their finances were slowly lost. So, deciding to start their lives again, Emilia and her mother Katinka, a very ill old lady, decided to sell their house in Vladivostok, its furnitures and the jewelry (except for a broche and a ring, the first gifts that Katinka received from her late husband), taking only the clothes and curtains (that would also be sewed by Emilia’s hands to become new clothes) to move into the russian countryside, where they go to live in a rented pension room in a local village.
To guarantee their survival, Emilia starts to make candies, pastries and cakes, that she puts inside of a basket and sells in the streets and door by door. It’s during one of her journeys to sell her desserts that she comes by the house of the Voynitsky family for the first time, starting to make friends with the nurse Marina Timofeevna and with Miss Sonya Alexandrovna, and calling the atention of the house administrator, Ivan Petrovich ‘Vanya’ Voynitsky, who starts to slowlly fall in love with Emilia.
By contrast, Vanya’s mother, Maria Vasilievna Voynitskaya, has with Emilia a relationship that is cordial, but indiferent.
Is a big shipper of Sonya Alexandrovna with Doctor Mikhail Lvovich Astrov, and helps to boost Sonya’s confidence in declaring her feelings to the enviromentalist medic. Thanks to Emilia’s help, for her joy, the two eventually get married.
Also, by sugestion and with the consent of her mother, Emilia gives to Vanya the broche for him to sell, so with the money, he could buy the part that his brother-in-law, Professor Aleksandr Vladimirovich Serebryakov, has of the countryside house, so that it may stay completely into Vanya’s name and he may guarantee it as the inheritance to his beloved niece Sonya and her future children, without the risk of the old Professor Serebryakov trying to sell it and letting the family in ruin. Emilia also counsels Vanya to search treatment for his depression with a psychiatrist.
In retribution for Emilia’s help for her getting married to her greatest love, Sonya proposes society to Emilia: she gives some money, and Emilia will open and administrate a pastry and bakery shop at the village. Sonya also becomes a huge shipper of Emilia with her uncle Vanya, helping him to get closer to the young baker.
Eventually, Vanya surprise Emilia with a marriage proposal when the two are alone in his garden. She asks some time to think, and Vanya says she has all the time in the world. Eventually, Emilia accepts, and the two get married. Since the two have no children, they go with the plans and let Sonya and the three children she has with Astrov as their legitimate heirs.
