What you need to know about hellers.
For starters. There are hellers in every fandom. Even if you think that there aren’t. There are. Always. You know the type. The ones who can’t just leave well enough alone at “I like this ship because I think it’s interesting” but go full tilt psycho with “if this doesn’t happen then I’m making it everybody else’s problem especially the writers who are obviously homophobic for not catering specifically to me an innocent flower who did noting wrong to nobody ever”. You know. That type of people. They are always in fandom. Always.
Secondly. They are not “truthers”. They are conspiracy theorists. On a scale of “the moon landing was faked” to that antisemitic one about the lizard people. Neither of which I believe by the way. They’re closer to the antisemitic one about the lizard people. Because they use stereotypes pulled out of their asses to prop up their inane theories. From how a character walks or what they wear to how they eat or what hobbies they have. Hellers use it to fuel their stupidity. Always.
A lot of hellers are racist. From merthur shippers downplaying Guinevere’s bond with Arthur because they can’t fathom her being anything more than an extra to his story (which isn’t even his by the way) to supercorp shippers being so vilely racist to Mehcad Brooks for the “great crime” of kissing “their lesbian queen” Katie McGrath as part of his job that he had to request extra security at conventions out of concerns for his own safety.
Quite a few hellers are like homophobic parents in how they treat characters who have outright said that they’re straight. Repeatedly in the case of Dean Winchester and John Watson. If a character says that they are heterosexual. They are heterosexual.
The weirdest thing to me is probably that some hellers act like there isn’t any representation in a show when there most definitely is. Supercorp shippers complained about “homophobia winning” when Supergirl ended because the two heterosexual white women didn’t kiss. Even though the show ended with an interracial lesbian wedding that had the couples adopted daughter as the flower girl. There are numerous canonically lgbt characters in 911 from Henren to Josh to Tommy and most recently Evan himself. But these don’t matter to hellers. Because evidently. If it’s not what they want down to the letter. It doesn’t count to them.
Then there’s the matter of when one of them is canonically lgbt and the other one isn’t. Especially if they’re best friends, one has a crush on the other or doesn’t have a crush on the other. And yes. I’m talking about stranger things and 911. Just because Will has a crush on Mike does not in any way mean that Mike is obligated to return Will’s feelings. And just because Evan is bisexual does not mean that he has a thing for Eddie. Mike and Jane are together. Evan is pining over Tommy. Byler and buddie are not real. And god willing they never will be. Get over it.
Hellers always have one thing in common though. They all think that they are the specialist, most victimised people in the fandom and cry foul when they’re called out on their bullshit. But they should always be called out on their bullshit. Because why should the sane ones like us have to suffer under their delusions when we all know that they’re wrong?
TL:DR; there are always going to be hellers in fandom. It’s a fact of life like death and taxes. But that doesn’t mean you have to sit there and take it. Call them out on their bullshit when you see it. Ship those canon ships you like. Hell. Ship the non canon ships for all I care. No one can stop you. It’s fandom. It’s for everyone. Just don’t let hellers ruin it for you. Don’t give them an inch. They just take the whole road and run with it. And that’s not good for anyone.
