“Mipha?” Link’s brow knit. “Are you okay?” “I… he…” Something prickled at her eyes. Her throat closed, even as her mouth opened. Her lips formed words that didn’t make a sound, her vision starting to blur, and then— —and then it all came crashing down on her. Everything—everything that had happened since her interrupted breakfast—every step taken, every worry, every fear, every minute of each battle she’d endured, every last drop of exhaustion and cold and hunger—all of it dropped on her head, an avalanche crashing down from the apex of Holy Mount Lanayru. A whimper escaped her open mouth, and then a sob, as the tears she’d wanted to cry since Mercay spilled out of her eyes and onto her cheeks. It almost hurt, the scalding, salty liquid pouring down a face rubbed raw by wintry winds; a sharp ache in her chest, her throat, accompanied it, making her cry all the harder. Because everything. Everything hurt. Mipha’s face crumpled as she cried, and she would have buried it in her shaking hands if Link hadn’t wordlessly wrapped his arms around her, gathering her close and holding her tight. Another sob tore itself out of her lungs at that, only to be muffled by the worn-soft fabric of his doublet where her face pressed against him. He was only a little bit taller than her, and it was perfect, perfect for holding her in these moments, their bodies fitting together like puzzle pieces. Breathing harshly, raggedly, Mipha clung to him, weeping for all she’d been through, for all the things she could no longer put into words or even coherent thoughts. Link said nothing, nothing at all, just held her and stroked her tail and waited patiently for her storm to subside.
