I find it neat how even though it isn't as prevalent as intended you can still see in subtle moments that Aphmau struggles with empathizing with others throughout mystreet. Especially in PDH S1 &2, granted she is a teenage girl but it explains her treatment of the wolves very well. (More below)
Despite having good intentions, PDH Aphmau just doesn't 'get' werewolf class and later on the werewolves she's supposed to mentor because she lacks the ability to empathize with their struggles. She doesn't care enough to open a book, let alone put herself in their shoes.
It circles back around in starlight because she begins 'acting' like a werewolf yet once again failing to actually put herself in their shoes in order to truly connect. You could say she finally begins doing so when she's transformed, except her arc isn't over. Just like how putting on a boot isn't the same as lacing it up, becoming something doesn't mean you understand it. I don't think this arc ends with her humanity, it ends with her life.
'It's because I'm so selfish that I couldn't see them suffering.' Aphmau says this as the realization dawns on her that while she's leaned on others she has never gone out of her way to let them lean on her. Both Blaze, someone who has been affected by Aphmau's unsympathetic nature countless times, and MCD!Aphmau watch on in silence, because Aphmau needs this revelation. Blaze only cuts in when she implies her (and his own) deaths are her doing.
I guess we'll have to wait for faded memories to learn the aftershocks of this revelation though.
