How could I not fall in love with a dragon who wraps all his magic in his love for me?
Maybe they could do it. Maybe they could escape and be happy, secretly, just the two of them, far away from their overbearing mothers and stifling royal courts.
It was so tempting … except …

And I really do believe that was all they needed to do, to be happy. But Foeslayer wasn't ready to leave her life and family for Arctic.
Which he already did for her, but hush, he also didn't think this all through

From small headcanons, I really like to imagine Foeslayer as physically bigger than Arctic. The prince on the other hand as skinny, royal-bones-overgrown-with-crystal fragile yet neat and beautiful (again, didn't fully execute the idea...)
After they started living on the island, he'd stop wearing jewels but still wanted to look pretty, so he began to wear flower crowns that Foeslayer made for him. She herself prefers less delicate necklaces, made of stones, starfish and shells.
It's so telling that no matter how much turmoil Arcticslayer faced in their relationship... no matter how much they fought or disagreed...
Arctic never manipulated or attempted to change who Foeslayer was even with his all powerful magic giving him the power to do so
What makes Darksight different (and worse) is that Darkstalker was willing to control Clearsight, and when he "recreated" her, he never accepted the parts of Clearsight that made Clearsight who she was
Before anyone else brings it up, yes Arctic is a shitty awful emotionally abusive father who denied his daughter the agency he unwaveringly gave his wife, but the topic is his treatment of Foeslayer alone.
Despite all Arctic's flaws, it's understandable why Foeslayer/Hope loves him even now, while Clearsight was happier moving on without Darkstalker.
I think so much about the tragedy of Arctic and Foeslayer. They were both young, newly adults who were sick and tired of living under the oppressive rule of their mother's. They wanted freedom and peace from it. When Foeslayer and Arctic found each other and found common ground with their desires to escape their lives, they fell in love; both with each other and with the idea of running away from their family. That the other was their way out of their pre-determined life. That they had some control and now's the chance to run.
They weren't thinking and were running off of blind admiration and a dream of no longer being bossed around. They didn't know that their actions would bring forth a war. I think when the initial euphoria of being free wore off and the reality of the situation sunk in is when they realized they weren't so much in love with the other as they were with the concept of escaping their miserable lives.
But, here they are together. Dragons are dying because of their impulsive actions. They have two dragonets they have to raise. Each passing day they can't stand each other more and more. It was doomed to fail. A tragedy in every sense of the word
