Zutara vs Ozai in The Dawn is Still Dark. It took me a while to get the scene right with several rewrites and I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Zuko forgives Ozai in Rivers in the desert. It was very emotional. I actually made myself cry while writing this.

Katara talking to the wolf spirit and Tui/La in the Spirit World scenes in Head Above Water. It was fun writing the lore and spirits' otherworldly characteristics. I definitely want to do the same with Agni in the upcoming chapters.

All the Zutara scenes at the playground in Dead Hearts. The moment when they became friends, the first love confession, and Katara acceptance after Zuko confesses to helping Ozai with the murders. They were all very raw and tender moments.

Sokkla date at the festival in The Dragon Princess and the Wolf Warrior which was heavily inspired by the festival scene in Tangled. It was my favorite scene in the fic so far.

Bonus:

6. Ursa escaping Ozai with baby Zuko and Azula in tow in Into the Night. I really wanted a modern au where Ursa saved both kids. The oneshot turned into a full fic thanks to this scene.

One important bit of context that I apply to Iroh's relationships to Azula and Zuko both in all my stories prior to the Siege of Ba Sing Se

They are afterthoughts to him at best. This is a man who was raised from birth to be the Fire Lord and is the Ulysses S. Grant who's leading great armies in a new style of utterly remorseless and ruthless war. He has his own son who has his own destiny to be the Fire Lord after him, so he's navel-gazing and focusing on his own son (helped by the implosion of his marriage years before Lu Ten died).

Insofar as he registers Ozai's kids he doesn't have very detailed views of them bar what he reads in letters from Ursa, whose views about Azula are in many ways as much self-searching and using the wrong person from a therapist, and whose views of Zuko are fawning 'best thing to ever happen to me.' And that's a very distant twelfth-rate priority to him.

He has more focus on trying (and never succeeding) to woo Hino back and to fix his marriage prior to the Siege than he ever does on Azula OR Zuko. His post-Siege view of what he thought about Zuko is a major unreliable narrator moment and his insisting to himself he's always been the same man and he uh, was not.

There is also literally no reason that Iroh, grown ass man and future Fire Lord and soon to be Fire Lord successor to an aging father commanding the ground forces of the Fire Nation in a world war WOULD pay attention to his niece and nephew in any great degree. This is 100% realism, and writing Iroh as a man with a variety of very big jobs and not really noticing a lot of things in family life versus the war he has so much fun in.

In your Modern Au Avatar fics like Happenstance, where did you get all the surnames for the characters? I know TheoWritesFiction uses them as well, but I'm wondering if there's a list on this site or Reddit or somewhere where they're all easily accessible?

Hi, thanks for asking ☺️ There is no list, although perhaps me & Theo should at some point create & post one in case other people want to use the names we use. I came up with some of the surnames Theo & I use & @theowritesfiction came up with some. We just used names that fit the closest real world ethnicities to the characters we could find.

okay but sokka and zuko getting caught in a storm. they get back inside, and zuko uses his fire bending to heat himself up so the rain all turns into steam, hair goes all floofy. sokka watches this in absolute awe, begs him to dry him off too, zuko get flustered cause now sokka is hugging him and cute boy.

it becomes a Thing. toph catches it one day and forces zuko to give her a warm hug too. soon, zuko is simply known for his Really Good Hugs. and he’s perfectly fucking happy with that.

ATLA AU - What if the Gaang made the wrong prediction during Sozin’s Comet?

Throughout the entire show, Ozai repeatedly sends out other people to do his work - with Azula becoming his main tool of enforcement after Book One. So, given this precedent, isn’t it possible that the Gaang and the White Lotus might assume that Ozai intended to do the same thing during the Comet, and send Azula out to do the dirty work of burning the Earth Kingdom while he waited at home? Of course, we can assume that the White Lotus got intel as to what was actually happening, but what if things didn’t turn out quite so conveniently and they went off of false assumptions?

This could easily spiral wildly in all sorts of ways. Maybe Aang goes to the Caldera looking for Ozai, and ends up in the morally terrifying situation of dealing with a mid-psychotic-break Azula - while meanwhile the Gaang bites off more than they bargained for and has to tackle the Phoenix King during the airship battle? There’s a massive amount of potential here for interesting AUs, and I’ve seen nothing using this premise.

(And there’s a lot of potential for pain and misery on many fronts but we’ll ignore that...)

thinking about au where all the avatar nations have different languages

1. the earth kingdom’s language would definitely be suppressed in areas the fire nation occupies

2. after 100 years of occupation in some of those places the fire nation language is legitimately taking over but there are a lot of hold overs and blending

3. local dialects all over the earth kingdom and southern water tribe language experiencing some linguistic drift from northern tribe but not a ton

4. aang speaks some of everything, thank god, and he’s twelve so the more time he spends speaking something the better he gets and QUICKLY!

5. katara and sokka only speak water tribe to start with but as katara’s trying to teach aang waterbending he starts teaching them earth kingdom.

6. iroh speaks earth kingdom fluently and conversational water tribe. zuko didn’t speak anything but fire nation when he was banished but his uncle’s made him study both. he’s not good, but it’s enough to get his point across.

azula, despite being a genius, never thought to learn anything else because she assumed anyone of consequence would be able to speak fire nation.

You see, cursive atla exists for my mind to run rampant and for me to ship literally anything that’s not canon because I love canon just the way it is, so I need another box for my favorite things... and that box is cursive atla.

Does this make sense to anyone else?? Like it’s ATLA but like... not? Like it’s just a little bit more modern or a little bit more batshit??
