Can you talk more about your specialist school you attended? What was it like compared to regular school and what was the process of getting in like? And what was your favorite and least favorite part?

It was WAY better than any public school! I don’t remeber how I “got in” just that I did some testing, got to tour the school, and then I started! It was diffrent becase we don’t focus on academics we work wayyyyy more on life skills like cooking, money, laundry, social skills, art class, speech therapy, OT, being safe in community, and even working! Yes we had “jobs” that we did either 2 or 3 days a week and the other days were in class. I did 2 days a week and started out working in the “bistro” what they called cafetria. I had lots meltdowns there thogh so ended up doing these boxes you practise skills like sorting objects with and going around school with my 1:1 cleaning all the doorknobs and handles in the school! We even got payed, 15 dollars a day so I got 30 dollars a week! I also went on field trips, went to school dances they held evry couple months after school, and did some after school activities! I was also in the GSA club! They had 2 wheelchair accessible vans at the school so I coud go out wich was awesome! And speaking of vans we had vans pick us up and bring us to school evryday becase the students going that school came from all diffrent cities, a few even from the next state over!!

My favrite part was outings and sensory room! My least favrite part was being put in the padded seclusion rooms when I had meltdowns at school. Also the time I got yelled at for having a meltdown on a field trip :(.

i figured out why my autism is so low masking. I got super fucking lucky!

i was popular in primary school and didnt realise until afterward. i was in the top academic banded class with a big friend of 6 girls. One who is still my best friend to this day

I used to bark when i was in primary school, it helped me communicate. But my dear best friend just thought i was the coolest kid ever! I barked!! Thats soo cool!

shes honestly the reason im not high masking she just made me feel loved and accepted for who i was no matter who in the world was against me

we were together in school for the almost the entire 12 year experience, she only left me for a single year when i transferred schools one year, and she followed to mine the next year

Sadly i havent seen her in two years since we split ways for university as shes on the other side of the world. But ill see her again someday.

I know cause shes my best friend :)

TIRED

I never thought that there was anything wrong with the system until I realized that I have been failed by it. As an AFAB autistic person, I was told to suck up my needs from a very young age and that I was being "too sensitive".

"Too sensitive" . Was I being to sensitive when I wanted to scratch my arm so bad that I was afraid I would tear up my skin if I did after I was forced to hold hands with boys of my school in gym class?

Was I being to sensitive when I had to go crying to the bathroom because the noise in my class was too loud?

Was I being too sensitive when I could not eat a thing in the school cafeteria because the texture made me want to gag?

My whole life, I've been told that I was being silly, childish, dramatic... When I expressed this feelings that I had out loud. How I could not connect with my peers and how the school felt like it was designed to confuse or hurt me.

When I gathered the courage to go to the counselors office to ask for help, because I was overwhelmed and overstimulated by all the screaming and sounds from my class that I could not hear my teacher and I thought my head was going to explode. After I told her what had happend and that I was sure I was neurodivergent she told me that she would call my mom and that they would chat. She was going to help me.

That did not happen. I went to ask for help in September, is March. And because I'm not professionally diagnosed I cannot ask for any help.

So, I can not ask for help because "nothing is wrong with me," but when I go to talk with a professional who is supposed to help me, she ignores me and my needs.

What I'm supposed to do? Try to fit in the system until I burn out? Have meltdowns in private and then try to figure out how to study for tomorrow's test? Try to survive without having any help?

I go to a special needs school and my brother just compared it to the SCP foundation 😔

I’m from Britain so I had no idea who or what Autism Speaks was until I became a part of Tumblr. And I can tell you what I think reading all the posts about them. I think that they are disgraceful and should not be a thing. The reason I am bringing this up is because my school was getting ready for Autism Awareness day next month. The reason that we start decorating so early is because I go to an Autism school. Anyway, my friend was printing out pictures from online when there was a poster which said ‘go blue for autism’. she didn't think anything of it but I knew that it was meant to represent Autism Speaks. I didn't want her to print it because then we would be supporting those people and that is not something I want to do.

The other week, in my Autism Awareness lesson, we were talking about when we were first diagnosed. My teacher asked the boy next to me and he said that he was angry and confused, which was understandable. The girl next to me said that she was confused and had to search it up on the internet. When it was my turn, I said that I wasn’t bothered about it and just went back to watching TV. The boy next to me asked me what age I was when I was first diagnosed and I said about 8-9. He then said, that because I was so young, I didn't understand what it was and that was the reason i didn't care. But I did know what it was and didn't care because I knew it wasn't going to change anything. I was still going to be the same person. I felt a bit angry when he said it because he didn't know what I had been through. anyway, that was a new story for you. Goodbye.

Hi guys, after chatting about my previous video where I talked about the lack of helpful resources for autistic people, my friend Thomas and I wanted to share some study tips!  (A quick note on this! You might be someone who struggles to go in and out of tasks and is disoriented by starting and stopping something you’re working on - that’s a difficulty that a lot of autistic people have, so it might be better for you to use longer periods of study time before you take a break. That way, you don’t have to worry so much about the difficulty of getting back into it after going away. 

It’s a case of thinking about how much time you’re able to effectively concentrate for and making sure that you’re not overloading yourself by not taking breaks regularly enough - if you try to take in too much at a time, the information often stops going in. The Pomodoro technique is about making your time most effective, and that depends on what works for you!)
