Allegiance Under Flame - Chapter 13

A week after the dress is chosen, the palace hosts what the Fire Nation calls a Bridal Honor Gathering, a small celebration meant to "honor the union and its future prosperity," in the garden. It's the kind of party Suki would be looking forward to, under different circumstances.

Suki takes her time getting ready, savoring every moment, suddenly finding herself grateful for every chance to bathe and dress in real privacy. A small, controlled moment that belongs only to her.

Soft fabric slides over her skin, fitted and structured in a way that breeds discomfort. The light pinks and soft greens woven in a delicate pattern certainly feel appropriate for a garden party.

She lets out a slow breath as she adjusts the ruffled sleeves and smooths the front of the skirt. Her gaze drops to the light reflecting off her left hand. The ring catches the sun streaming in from the window, gold metal wrapping around her finger and curling up in an intricate flame that cradles the almost comically large diamond. If fits perfectly. It feels heavy. Turning her hand slightly, she watches how the light fractures through the stone. It's beautiful.

Suki exhales, squares her shoulders, and opens the door.

Azula is waiting for her. Suki freezes in the threshold.

"Good morning," Azula greets smoothly, and Suki wonders how long she's been standing there, waiting. Her onyx hair is pulled in a simple bun, cradling a gold headpiece with small jewels that perfectly match her wine red dress. "I thought I would give you an escort to the event."

"Isn't it just in the garden?"

The corner of Azula's mouth curves slightly. "Not because I expect you to get lost, you've managed the walk often enough." She inclines her head. "But it is a bridal celebration," she adds lightly. "It would be better for the brides to arrive together, don't you think?"

"Oh. Right." Suki nods. "That makes sense."

They walk down the corridor, and something feels different. Suki had expected… well, she doesn't know what she expected, but something else. Some kind of tightening of the reins now that everything is publicly official. More rules, more expectations, less space. Instead, she seems softer somehow. Not dramatically so. And certainly not enough to be mistaken for kindness. But there's a certain looseness to her posture.

"I get it," Azula says after a moment, glancing sideways. "These events are never enjoyable. Too many people pretending to be impressive." Her tone shifts to something almost playful. "But don't worry, we can make it… more interesting."

Suki's shoulders stiffen. There's always a cost when Azula talks like that. "How?" she asks.

Azula glances at her, then away again. "I like to play a game," she says. "Pick a person, decide what they want. How far they'll go to get it. And, what they're afraid of. Try to do all of this before they say anything out loud."

Suki studies her as they walk. "Are you ever wrong?"

Azula lets out a breath that almost resembles a chuckle. "Very rarely."

Something cold settles under Suki's ribs.

"I heard from Zeina," Azula continues, changing the subject, "that you requested a specific guest today." Suki's stomach dips. "The dancer." But there's no accusation in her voice.

Suki inhales carefully, gathering what courage she can. "Her name is Ty Lee," she says carefully. "I met her recently, and I thought, since it's kind of a more more casual party…" She trails off. Azula's pace slows, and she raises an eyebrow. Suki swallows. There's no turning back now. "Actually, I was hoping she could come to the wedding, too."

They stop. Azula turns and studies her. Not coldly, but not with any warmth either. Just evaluating. Suki doesn't say anything, despite her instincts telling her to backtrack. She holds her ground.

"Of course," Azula finally says, softly. "If that's what you want." She glances at Suki's ring. "After all, it's the closest I can get to giving you the wedding you actually want."

Suki feels something warm in her chest, and her throat tightens. "Thank you," she says after a moment. "Really."

Azula's smile looks almost genuine.

Suki hesitates, then ventures. "What about… was she able to make it today?"

Azula's smile sharpens instantly. "Please," she says, softness evaporating. "What do you take me for?" And with that, she turns and walks the last few paces to the garden entrance. She offers her hand to Suki, who rushes to catch up. "Shall we?"

Suki takes it. Azula's grip tightens. Their feet cross from polished marble to carefully laid garden path, and the shift is immediate.

Azula's straightens. Her shoulders set, her chin lifts, as though no softness had existed there at all, replaced with something sleek, controlled, and faintly amused. "Stay close," she orders, once again every bit the Fire Nation princess.

The garden is immaculate. Lanterns hang from metal hooks, their soft glow warm against the daylight. Music hums softly through speakers Suki had never noticed are built into the structures around the garden. Tables are arranged and adorned with polished trays of delicate, bite-sized foods. Skewered glazed meats, small buns filled with spiced vegetables, delicate pastries dusted with sugar and citrus zest. Crystal glasses catch the light in manicured hands, filled with brunch cocktails and juice blends.

A small crowd is dispersed throughout the garden, all of whom turn to the couple as they enter. They each raise a hand in their own practiced, royal wave. Suki's stomach growls, an ill-timed reminder she still hasn't eaten.

"Lord Toru," Azula greets brightly as a short, heavyset man approaches, holding a cocktail that, judging by his posture, is not his first. "So glad you could make it. May I introduce my fiancee, Captain Suki?"

The nobleman looks her over slowly, clearly unimpressed. "Yes, yes, quite. Miss Suki," he starts, and Suki flexes her jaw at the choice to ignore her title, "it must be quite the adjustment. Going from… simpler island life, to the Fire Nation."

Azula's gaze flicks to her. Waiting.

Of course.

Suki straightens. "It's been an adjustment," she says, keeping her voice even. "But I've found the Fire Nation to be, well, deeply committed to its traditions. There's a lot to learn from that."

Toru hums, sounding satisfied. Azula lightly grazes her fingers against the back of Suki's hand in silent approval.

Moving through the party, the next guest they encounter is a middle-aged woman wearing enough jewels to rival some of the palace's displays. She gushes to Azula about the honor of being invited, then shakes Suki's hand with too much enthusiasm.

"Do the Kyoshi Warriors—" she says the name like they're an exotic fruit— "find Fire Nation culture to be too restrictive?"

Suki keeps her expression neutral. "We value discipline," she replies. "So there's a… certain familiarity in that respect."

The woman's smile deepens and her eyebrows raise slightly, as though Suki's revealed something fascinating. Mid-conversation, Azula inclines her head toward the woman apologetically.

"I've taken enough of your time," she says gently. "I should circulate before I'm accused of favoritism."

The woman laughs in response, taking it as a compliment. Azula turns to leave, but stops halfway and leans in so her lips nearly brush Suki's ear.

"You'll be fine," she murmurs. Then she steps away.

The next question comes quickly. "Tell me, Captain, do you miss home?"

Suki answers without thinking. "Of course." She blinks, and her lips part. "But I'm so grateful to be here," she adds after a beat.

The woman's smile doesn't change. "Of course you are. So," she leans in closer, secretively, "you agree the alliance benefits Kyoshi Island as well?"

Suki's pulse ticks. "It…" She clears her throat. "It ensures stability for the entire region."

The woman nods, satisfied, and wanders away, earrings and bracelets clacking together as she moves.

Finally, finally, Suki turns toward one of the tables full of food. She gets two steps closer.

"Suki!"

You've got to be kidding me.

She turns, and relief crashes over her. "Ty Lee!"

Her friend glides toward her in graceful strides, pink sundress bouncing lightly with her.

"You look amazing," Ty Lee says as she gets closer.

"So do you."

Ty Lee twirls once, as if to demonstrate. "I mean, I always look cute, but today? You're right. Exceptional."

Suki laughs quietly. "It's good to see you," she says, softer now.

Ty Lee's expression warms. "Yeah. You too." They're both silent for a moment, before Ty Lee brightens suddenly. "So! Engagement! It's official!" She claps her hands together lightly. "So public, so dramatic. I love it!"

Suki's smile falters just slightly. "Yeah, it's… a lot."

"I know it's all super staged," Ty Lee says, lowering her voice conspiratorially, "but… it still felt kind of romantic."

Suki swallows. "Yeah," she says. "It did." She tries not to dwell on the reminder that even with her, there are limits.

"Hey," a woman's voice interjects. Ty Lee and Suki turn to see an irritated-looking woman in a maroon floor-length dress covered in black lace, holding a parasol to shield her from the sun. Half of her hair is pulled back into two small buns near the top of her head, the rest flowing freely down her back.

"Mai!" Ty Lee squeals, clearly recognizing the woman. "This is Suki. You know, Azula's boo?"

The woman—Mai—turns her attention to Suki. Despite her dower expression, she's stunningly beautiful. "You're doing better than most people would in your position."

Suki hesitates. "Oh. Thank you."

"That's high praise," Ty Lee chirps.

Mai scoffs. "Don't get used to it." She turns and walks away.

Ty Lee starts to say something to Suki, but Mai's attention has already drifted. Useless conversations bore her, and she hated having to introduce herself to Azula's little prisoner. She feels a pang of empathy toward the Kyoshi girl, and shoves it down. Not her problem.

Mai navigates through the crowd, ignoring any attempt to get her to engage. She finds Azula quickly, standing near a roselily bush with a champagne flute still mostly full, eyes pinned to Ty Lee and Suki over by the food tables.

"You're staring," Mai says in lieu of greeting.

"I'm… observing."

"That's what that is?"

Azula doesn't look at her.

"Why does it bother you so much?" Mai presses. "And why do you keep pushing Ty Lee toward her if seeing them together just pisses you off?"

The princess's gaze snaps to Mai for an instant before locking back into place. "Tread lightly, Mai." Her tone is steel. "This is a party."

Mai raises a hand in a gesture of surrender. "Fine." But she doesn't drop it entirely. "Just pretend you don't see it."

Azula's jaw ticks. "Go get her."

Mai doesn't argue. Moments later she's at Ty Lee's side, pulling her away as she offers Suki an apologetic wave and makes some excuse. Suki watches her go, confused and disappointed.

"Good," Azula mutters under her breath. After waiting a moment to ensure Mai and Ty Lee have gone, she approaches Suki. "You survived," she praises.

Suki starts, then smiles, relief clear on her face. "We're done?"

"We're done." She pauses. "Shall I return you?"

Suki hesitates, but something stirs in her chest. She allowed Ty Lee to come to the party, and she'll be at the wedding. She answers honestly. "I'd actually like that."

The walk back is quieter, softer.

"You performed well," Azula says. "You adapted quickly."

Suki exhales. "I didn't have much of a choice."

"No," Azula agrees. "But you did great anyway." She grimaces. "Even when faced with Lord Toru's… unfortunate body odor."

Suki stares at her, then laughs. "I thought I was the only one!"

Azula scoffs. "Hardly."

They approach Suki's door.

"You won't be here much longer," Azula points out. "You'll be moving into my suite."

"I remember." Suki turns to finish their conversation, but Azula opens the door, and steps inside. Suki opens her mouth, closes it, then follows. The door closes.

"Are you looking forward to it?" Azula asks.

Suki hesitates. "I… don't know." It's the truth, but it feels like the wrong answer somehow.

Azula steps closer, closing the distance between them completely. Suki's breath catches. Heat floods her skin. Azula leans in, and her breath smells like citrus juice. Her perfume smells like cherry and jasmine. She holds Suki's gaze, but doesn't say anything. She tilts her head and brushes their noses together gently. Suki's mind races, remembering the feel of Azula's lips.

As if reading her mind, Azula glances down at Suki's lips, then back into her eyes. "Do you like it when I kiss you?"

Suki's pulse hammers in her ears. She can't think. Heat pools low in her gut and she knows that no matter how she answers, there will be no turning back.

"Don't lie," Azula whispers.

Suki swallows. "Yes."

There's no hesitation. Azula kisses her, and it's different this time. Hungrier, like she's staking claim.

And this time, Suki doesn't even consider pulling away.

I love Azula. I believe she is one of the best characters in the show. So, here is an Azula centric chapter for you guys...

So I have an Azula centric oneshot idea which is very weird and absurd, even awful but i want to share with you guys for learning what you think about it. İt's a plot i choose for the Azula Drabbles and Oneshots collection but if you're interested you can s use it.(which everybody gonna hate this plot I'm sure since it's really awkward)

So I'm thinking of a game specialized for firebenders but azula would change that rule to no bending. İ haven't decided all the rules since i hate all the ideas came up to my mind but I'm still working on it and trying to not doing it very childish or mature. Like a game for 13+ audience. İt's a team game and all the teams consist of two players. Teams would be Azula-Zuko, Katara-Aang and Sokka-Toph

Gaang tried to fight against Azula but she won because she was waiting for them and used some traps to catch them. İt's a bending special traps, for example katara can't use water because Azula blocked her bending ability with an wolfbat poison she added Katara's bending water while fighting with her. Which makes Katara's aura unbalanced and she can't can't use her bending until using an antidote, she don't have to use antidote but that way she can't bend water 72-80 hours. But of course they don't know this because it's a fact Azula learned from a royal poison expert(ozai requested it and he even let the expert use non-lethal poisons on her for immunity) and it's not a common fact. Like it's actually normal to not know it. And Azula refuse to give them antidote if one of them leaves.

Azula threatened the gaang while she fight with them, she said Tohoku-one of the Earth Kingdom citys i made up- is under an invasion and it started now. She acts like they're the reason of this occupation and wouldn't let them go until she take what she wants.

The deal is if Azula wins, she gains a trip to the sprit world which she has some future plans for it, but if gaang wins, she will say stop to Tohoku occupation. So with this antidote thing and stopping occupation things make deal seem more acceptable.

Either way Azula wins or lose, she will gain something that can be useful for her future plans. Even if she not wins something because she lost the deal, at least she had chance to using and improving her poison making skill which she's not using since a little kid.

İt's not actually in a season but i guess i can use early episodes of season 3, Mai and Ty Lee won't be around since Azula wanted it to be a sister-brother bonding activity and she needs them for taking information about one of her future plans. So Mai and Ty Lee is in city and they try to reach secret archive.(it includes all fire lord's yearly summary's and Azula thinks she can use it to finishing this war) She don't want to spend time with searching some secret archive that doesn't know is it real or not and she also wants to spend time with his brother. She really cares about him but she can't admit it.

Zuko will be a part of Azula's team, not gaang. Azula actually cares about him because he defended her against Ozai after coming back and Azula start to think maybe Zu-Zu is not so bad as she thought. And she won't admit but she miss teasing with Zuko like the time when they're kids. And of course she also thinks he would be an important ally because enemy Zuko really annoys him. Also she has a little regret for not helping him while banishing thing. She is not a heartless monster and she knows it's her mom's fault, not his. And burning his face in all their people is even crossed Azula's line.

And of course Zuko don't know her plans, he just think she's trying to catch the Avatar but surely he suspect Azula's planning something. Just Azula is so good at covering her secrets.

İt's supposed to be an easy with little plot oneshot but it turned into some short story.

İ hope i can explain it what I'm thinking about and thanks for all of your ideas! İ normally don't ask too many questions about plot because I'm always think it's more easy and fun to write what you think at moment. But since I'm trying to be a better writer, i started planning and editing stuff.

Please if you have any questions about this oneshot's AU ask it and I'll answer all of it. I'm having a really important exam on 17-18 June-i'm preparing this exam since last year- and i may not be able to write a lot, it's been 4.100 words but it's waits for writing. İf any of you guys have any ideas to improve this plot or fixing plot holes, please let me know.

Also if anyone's interested with writing this weird thing then i would love to read it!

This is the part where i stopped writing.

"I really just want to talk. And I'm here with only good intentions. The best option you have is listening to me."

Azula slightly waves her hand in the air, then she speaks one last time.

"Or I'll make sure they know this situation happens because of the Avatar. İt's all your choice."

The waterbender pauses for a while to consider her options, knowing if she doesn't make a quick decision, the entire team will be captured because of her. Without the bending and weakened by the poison, she'll only becomes a burden to her team. She sighs deeply before speaking in an exasperated tone, it must make her feel helpless to think about the possibility of not being able to waterbend again.

Okay so I was just scouring the Azula centric fic tag on AO3 as one does and stumbled on something that looked marginally interesting. A modern AU with Fire Nation still having monarchs. I was literally like a couple sentences in and the Azula and Mai interaction just screamed MaiZula. And ladies and gents this is Azutara and Maiko fic. The angst already started brewing in my head because this is one of my favorite tropes. You can't pry unrequited MaiZula away from me,not even from my cold dead hands.

Then my brain started thinking as it does and I remembered the song Satisfied from Hamilton (which is one of my faves because I live for angst and letting go of someone you love for another person. Hurts so good).

Like imagine! If you don't know the song go listen to it then fucking imagine!

Azula and Mai meet officially for the first time at a banquet or party of some sort thrown by the Fire Lord. For this AU Iroh actually does something to end the war and oh look defeating Ozai in Agni Kai is not hard for the fabled Dragon of the West. And oh wow look how easy it is to end the war as the Fire Lord. They're young here. Maybe 8. Azula is intrigued by Mai in passing but after interacting with her is smitten by her dry wit and relatively refreshing way she addresses her despite being a Princess. Mai doesn't walk egg shells around her and isn't impressed by her status alone. Mai equally likes Azula. Her sharp wit,somewhat dark humor and even if she acts like she's Agni's gift to the Fire Nation when they sneak away from the party it turns out Azula wasn't one to carelessly brag about her skill. It's a bonus that when Mai tentatively reveals her interest and skill in knives it gets a positive and even impressed response from Azula. It's a childish crush Azula doesn't even know she has. They meet Ty Lee. The daughter of a lesser noble who brings a balance to their now trio. They grow older and Azula realizes she likes Mai when she sees how Zuko and Mai look at each other. It's nothing important. Mai is hers. Zuko rarely wants to play with them anyways. They grow older. She tricks Zuko into pushing Mai into a fountain. Her heart hurts and she ignores it. Azula cannot like Mai. Mai is a girl. She is to marry a man her father picks and promote the glory of the Fire Nation.

Her father is Fire Lord. Mother is gone. Iroh is Fire Lord. Mother is still gone. Her feelings for Mai are an after thought in the drama that is her life. Mai never moves away because Ozai isn't there to give Mai's father positions. Azula is 13. She has feelings for Mai and it makes her want to vomit and dance for joy and cry all at once. Her father is a disgraced former Fire Lord who tried to usurp his brother,the beloved Dragon of the West who bravely fought for the Fire Nation to the point of loosing his son their beloved Prince Lu Ten. She is the daughter and second child of the disgraced Prince. Ozai says power is everything and she has the least power in the Royal Family. She's can live with it. Her father cannot. She will marry a good family and get her father connections. Mai comes from a great family. Mai is a girl. Azula has her duties and even if she'll never say it she cares about that dum dum Zuzu and wants to see him happy despite how he somehow self sabotages every time he interacts with Ozai who is technically beneath him now. Him and Mai are also oddly perfect for each other. Zuko is less angsty than in canon but I still think he'd be a lil emo sad boy with daddy issues. Azula likes Mai. She might one day love Mai. And there's a chance if she confesses Mai would accept her and they could build something together but her life is a tragedy and Azula isn't destined for a happy ever after. So she pushes Mai to Zuko. Gives her friend the confidence to finally do something. Invites her to the palace them always miraculously disappears once they accidentally stumble into Zuko. Mai catches on. Confronts her once but she and Zuko end up dating and Azula has a life time to nurse her broken heart.

Making Iroh Fire Lord in this is honestly just because I want the war to be over and Azula to have less responsibilities and not be a child soldier for Ozai. Although Ozai being Fire Lord brings about a whole other Universe of angst. But Iroh is in charge so now her position and responsibilities are different than in canon. Ozai is disgraced and his only chance at saving face is connections and trying to make achievements which is hard seeing as the war is over and that's what he's obsessed with.

Now que Iroh who is a manipulative mf and if anyone disagrees go and disturb your ancestors no be your fic idea. But as my gorgeous gorgeous besties know Iroh is manipulative politician and he wants better relations with the other Nations and what better way that interracial marriage. Don't ask me how this makes sense because it doesn't. Logically this would only spark outrage from the Fire Nation that has spent decades believing themselves superior to the other nations but if Iroh had put in the work and hours to improve international relations with let's say allowing displaced people from places the Fire Nation destroyed to migrate and settle in the Fire Nation we might be hearing a slightly different story. So the interracial marriage wouldn't be too far fetched.

Now my poor brain has to choose between Katara or Yue because I ship them both so hard with Azula you don't even understand. If I want to start explaining why I love each individual dynamic this post is gonna be even longer than my usual ones and I already know I love to make long ass posts so I will spare y'all for now.

For Political realism let's go with Yue. The North is at the very least a rich Nation and the Fire Nation might be more accepting since it would look like they have something go gain. Add in the fact that the Princess is blessed by the fucking spirit Tui who I headcanon as a spirit sibling of Agni you got some decent press.

But Katara could still work in a politically sensible way. The South is obviously devasted by the Fire Nation and having Katara enter a Political marriage as an excuse to give reparations can be a good way to ease the egos of the Fire Nation.

But we're going with Yue for this.

Now Ozai obviously wouldn't want his son who is the Future Fire Lord to marry a water tribe girl. Princess or not. I can imagine him having plans for marrying Azula to powerful families for clout but sacrifices must be made and Azula is offered up as tribute instead. Ozai would probably pretend to be looking for Zuko's best interest in front of Iroh and with Zuko's relationship with Mai it'd probably work. Bada bing Bada boom. Azula is marrying Yue. They're around 17-18 here. They would be betrothed until Azula is 20 which is the age you enter adulthood in the Fire Nation.

There's going to be so much politics in this that I don't have the energy to think about. This was supposed to be a fun post y'all.

Azula would obviously be angsty about this because after spending her entire life knowing her father would never approve her marrying a woman and disgracing their family with her 'deviance', here he was marrying her off to one so he could use Zuko as a pawn in a different game. She always knew she was nothing but a Pai sho tile to him but having him finally use her like this. And Iroh who never cared for her doesn't care much beyond his idealistic plans for world peace being fulfilled. Like he hadn't already tricked the bloody Avatar into thinking he's some fun tea loving uncle type.

But Azula is a good princess of her Nation and she takes everything thrown at her in stride. She's going to be civil and polite and respectful towards her future wife.

Future wife. That one would definitely sting. Because the only time those words were uttered in her mind where when she secretly fantasized of a life she could have had with Mai if she had been selfish. Now some random girl she's never met gets the title. Now the title is acceptable and even brings Ozai satisfaction. Because how dare she have anything for herself if it didn't help Ozai and his schemes? How dare she have aspirations and goals outside Ozai? How dare she wish her Uncle and brother spoke up when she was an unimportant piece in their games? How dare she exist as a daughter, sister,niece and expect the world to let her be? How dare she exist?

Homegirl is spiralling at this point. But then she meets Yue and it's not so bad she tells herself.

They're relationship gonna be pure fluff. There will be some angst. Them bonding over having to choose duty and service to their Nation and father's over their personal wants and desires. Then being used as pawns for politics. How oppressed women are everywhere despite the Fire Nation claiming to be the most progressive Nation in the world (cough America I'm looking at you and your abortion laws cough cough). Yue can have a doomed romance with Sokka for angst because my baby deserves some angst too. It's not just about Azula anymore. Everyone gets angst! 😂💔.

Then both of them fall in love and angst more because oh no. We both agreed this was just an arrangement and we didn't have to force ourselves into anything. Azula sees Yue interacting with Sokka and wants to die. Yue sees Azula with Ty Lee and equally wants to die. Honestly I am a liar because where is the fluff I talked about? But then ✨ communication ✨ happens and they realize they both love each other. Yah ✨🥰

Might add in a part with Ozai scheming and finally getting tossed in jail because fuck him. He's a loser and deserves nothing. What kind of monster sees canon Azula and doesn't go 'I must protect and love this feral child'. Smh.

I vow to write this AU someday. But anyone's free to steal the idea and write. Please someone competent write this I'm actually begging 😭
