Bach Suite No.2 Journal Entry #1
since the beginning of this blog, I thought it would be incredibly useful for myself to record my approach to pieces to share with my teachers, have a clearer goal, etc. however, I kinda slacked on posting here for a bit, so I’ve missed recording my approach to sonatas but I caught myself in time for the start of Bach Suite No. 2
I’ve done a little bit of work so far, but only on the prelude. I find bow distribution as well as interpretation throughout the prelude to be difficult. Something my teacher told me that was helpful was how he viewed the prelude as a peaceful prayer. Something extremely helpful has been to think in large phrases instead of measure to measure.
Since I’ll be starting the Allemande, I’ll be working on refining the prelude as I go along.
All the recordings I have heard of the Prelude:
Cello Suite No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1008 (Transcr. for Viola) : I. Prelude Lillian Fuchs - https://youtu.be/JJLFAj6DPS0
Bach Suite No. 2 in d minor | Erika Gray (viola) https://youtu.be/Q0O9gFf-tiI
Bach Cello Suite No. 2 in D min. BWV 1008 Casals https://youtu.be/HhMo7320RlI
Bach, J.S.: Cello Suite No.2 in D Minor, BWV 1008: I. Prelude by Mstislav Rostropovich
Cello Suite No. 2 in D Minor, BMV 1008: I. Prelude by Anner Bylsma
Cello Suite No. 2 in D Minor, BMC 1008: I. Prelude by Andre Navarra
Suite No. 2, BMV 1008, in D Minor: Prelude by Janos Starker ( cadenza is A+++)
Cello Suite No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1008: I. Prelude by Yo-Yo Ma
Suite No. 2 in D Minor BWV 1008.: I. Prelude by Jean-Guihen Queyras
*I might eventually make another journal entry on why I like each recording since I strongly like certain parts of each one

Day 35/100 for my #100daysofpractice Trying different things tonight to make this Bach prelude sound more like how a cellist might interpret the music, specifically triple and quadruple stops. Due to the nature of the cello, many of these stops would be arpeggiated as well, but there are so many different ways to do so. #adamsstatepercussion #adamsstatemusic #adamsstate #percussion #percussionist #percussionlife #percussionista #drums #drummer #drumming #music #musician #musicianlife #classicalmusic #classicalmusician #orchestra #cello #cellosuite #bachcellosuites #stringedinstrument #chambermusic #chambermusician (at Adams State University - Music Department)

We made our first visit to @whiteravenwinery last night and listened to the fabulous cello of Lee Zimmerman while sipping some lovely wines. So many delicious choices! I immediately thought the Voignier would pair beautifully with the Panfish Piccata recipe l shared in my @flatheadbeacon column last week. Cheers! #montanawinery #localbusiness #madeinmontana #bachcellosuites #wineandfoodpairing #wineandfish #winespiration #twiceastastyblog #twiceastasty https://www.instagram.com/p/CaNfXMgPc7e/?utm_medium=tumblr
Practicing chords on #violoncellodaspalla To make chords sing, it is necessary to minimize the amount of bow used on the bass notes to allow more bow for the melody notes to sing. Often string players spend too much bow on the bass, leaving very little bow for the melody. This is due, at least in part, to slow careful practice and diligent tuning of the bass notes. To train the optimal bow allocation I practice as follows: 1) exaggerate the desired bow allocation by playing the bass notes super slow and with very little bow. Increase the bow speed after the break to the melody notes. 2) Now the bass notes are clear and focused and the melody notes have plenty of bow to sing. This also heightens the sense of counterpoint as the bass and melody notes have slightly different timbre as a result of the differing bow speeds. Additionally, the chord break is much easier lower in the bow where the hair is more flexible than in the middle. Ideally the break will occur near the natural balance point or center of mass of the bow. #happypracticing ! #cellopractice #bachcellosuites #bachcellosuite #bachcello #jsbach #cellolesson #cellomaster #cellomasterclass #celloclass #cellolove #beautifulmusic #sarabande #suite6 #violoncello #baroquecello #baroquemusiclovers #celloist #cellistoworld #cellobration #unusualinstruments #classicaliscool #ifitaintbaroquedontfixit #violoncelle (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/COnCN2FAASY/?igshid=ea4trkdahkgt
