I had the privilege of recently performing two of my very first concerts featuring #violoncellodaspalla While I have no more performances currently scheduled, I anticipate #cellosuite no 6 by #jsbach will be a staple in future concerts since it was specifically composed for a #5stringcello and it’s probably my favorite piece in the world that I play as a #soloist ! I created this review plan for myself so I can keep this important piece in shape while allowing myself time to work on other repertoire. There are 7 days in the week and 6 movements in the suite. I assigned one movement for each day with the longest and most complicated movement, the prelude, receiving 2 days. My intention is to, at a minimum, spend a few minutes each day on the assigned movement. Intonation, contact point, bow weigh & bow speed. We usually think of intonation as being in the realm of the left hand fingers; however, an excess of bow weight or pressure can bend the strings out of tune even if the left hand fingers are accurately placed. Consider the following: 1) Strings get softer further from the bridge and therefore cannot accept as much weight before the pitch bends. 2) Thinner (higher) strings can accept less weight at the same distance from the bridge as thicker (lower strings) 3) Shorter strings (higher positions) can accept less weight than longer strings (lower positions) at the same distance from the bridge. Double stops are notorious for being out of tune. I always check my bow placement so I can tell if the issue is in the left hand or the right. 3 videos from last night’s practice of #gigue from #cellosuite no 6 by #jsbach 1) Slow slurred staccato (separate notes while preserving bow direction). I carefully monitor my bow placement so it is as close to the bridge as possible taking advantage of the string’s stiffness and strength. ~~swipe left~~ 2) Slow practice with performance bowings taking care not to let the bow slip into the softer, weaker part of the strings. Here’s a fun metronome drill to develop a strong sense of pulse as well as musical freedom and insights into phrasing! Swipe left for each stage! I begin the practice with many clicks per measure. Rhythm from note to note is strict. For each stage, I reduce the number of clicks and increase the tempo slightly. Using progressively fewer clicks gradually transfers the rhythmic responsibility from the metronome to me! By the time I get to the fewest number of clicks, I’m in a stage of intense but relaxed concentration — almost zen!The rhythm is accurate but not “beat-y” or “metronomic”. I become aware of the strong and weak beats and learn where I may want to emphasize and deemphasize beats to support long flowing phrases. In faster movements, depending on the meter, I may end up with clicks every other measure.
