Originally, I went in worried the opposite would happen. Growing up, I've been taught that Nigeria, the country, is homophobic. (I was born in America.) But over time, I learned that there's tons of other queer Nigerians; some are out, and some are in the closet 😭.

the thing about booker's exile is that, as someone deeply invested in the concept of exile in fiction, the idea that it gets cancelled out at six months is such a waste.

i need this guy to be wandering the earth in lonesome drifting for an actual century. sometimes forging documents, sometimes getting drunk by watersides. i need him to go feral for a decade or two. i need him to go back to the tundra and die by hanging several thousand times and trudge through nuclear sites to get people out, to tend to the animals left behind and escape from this brave new world with its intelligent cameras that keep seeking him out. hoping to corrode and never dying.

i need him to sink lower than low and rise through the muck and do, at least once, to do oncology visiting hours for people with no family to visit. to live right and live badly, but to live, like andy said, if only because andy told him to.

crucially, i need him to meet the group by the waterside, whatever that waterside looks like after so long, as a creature long alienated from its kind. wiser and sadder and braver, presumably. striving for atonement, assuming he doesn't break the terms of exile. having forgotten how to exist with people of a similar lifespan, with being known for longer than small snatches of a mortal lifetime.

not knowing how to come in from the cold, changed into something that does not have a place in company, miserable or otherwise. a century alone, they said. so let's have it, then.
