happy holidays to all the bedbound people, whether it’s your first year spending the holidays in bed or your tenth, whether you’re in pain or having an easier day, whether people come to visit you in bed or not, whether you’re feeling up or down, or angry or alienated. there are people out there just like you and people who understand.
If you've ever told a person who's had to be bedbound for a period of time that you wish you could "just stay in bed", DO IT.
Stay in bed. For days. But don't get up if someone needs you to, or you get bored, or you get antsy. Don't do anything other than rest. Just lie in your bed, whether you need to get stuff done around the house or socialize or anything else "productive". You'll have to cancel on people, you'll disappoint them, they won't understand.
And if you're thinking, "well, i CAN'T just be in bed. There's stuff that has to be done - I have plans", maybe ask yourself why you assumed a disabled person doesn't have plans or things to do or desires.
y'all if any of you have issues with heat sores from bed (or just being overheated in general, I'm in chronic pain groups so I like to clearly specify it's helpful for people who are bedbound/have limited or restricted movement, especially due to heat sensitivity in the summer) Aldi's FINALLY HAS THE COOLING PADS AGAIN!!!! they're fantastic for slapping on your mattress, don't leak and don't need to be pre-frozen, and the cooling lasts a good 6-8 hrs and refreshes itself over the next couple of hours. I get 2 or 3 and rotate them through the night/whenever I'm stuck in bed for the day, by the time one states getting hot the other one is ready to go. and since it's meant for dog claws it's not gonna pop on you because you scratched it with a hangnail or whatever. (also you can wipe it with a wet towel to clean it if need-be). they're FIFTEEN USD and they last for several months of daily usage (mine eventually died about a year later, but unfortunately they didn't sell them last year and it was Pure Hell™ 🥲)
tldr: Aldi's is selling cooling mats for 15 USD and they're a fuckin godsend if you're someone that has issues with heat or need help cooling your bed/recliner/etc.
being severely disabled may leave me mostly housebounds and somedays mostly bedbound, and make it very difficult for me to live my life much les exist
but that doesn't mean i need to diminsh what i can do and enjoy in life! i am just as much a person as abled people are.
my life may seem sad or wasted to some assholes out there, but that's on them for undervaluing disabled people and our personhood.
we have things we enjoy! we're allowed to romanticize what we can in our lives! i'm someone who loves creativity in any form. and the most accessible creativity for me is admiring others creations! i love stories! i love projects and art!
and it doesnt matter if i dont "contribute to society" like abled people do. disabled people are allowed to have things they love and not have it be overshadowed by ableism!

I really wish people understood how shitty being bedbound is.
Like for me, it's laying down barely able to move my legs and physically stuck in bed.
It isn't fun to feel like your trapped
Please stop saying you wish you could stay in bed all day when a disabled person talks about being bedbound
am concerned as a homebound person about losing access to community online due to increasing censorship -> open article -> “build community offline” 😑
