‘If you’re trying to negotiate, know that it’s Beast who will answer to the Quiet Council’
From X-Force # 20 by Ben Percy and Josh Cassara
At first, I thought the mission at the outset of the Krakoa saga to take out the base by the sun was plot-driven, to create heroic deaths for a bunch of favs and then show off the resurrection system. Now I'm certain. A couple of OMEGA LEVEL mutants who can control magnetic fields & atmosphere would be a LOT more useful inside Mercury than wings or a guy who makes holes in train stations (which is why he didn't go on Asteroid M raid), but the Doylist point of the mission really was their death.
You're certainly right from a Doylist perspective, and it might even be true from a Watsonian perspective - is Xavier enough of a bastard to send his X-Men to die just to give a Big Reveal for the Five at the founding of Krakoa?
I think not.
As we see in Hickman's X-Men, and Inferno, the Orchis Forge is Krakoa's own bridge too far. They destroy the Mother Mold, but Nimrod comes online anyway, thanks to the time travel/multiverse meddling of Omega Sentinel. After the mission in HOXPOX, Krakoa sends its biggest guns again and again - they send X-Force, they send Mystique, they send Magneto, they send assassins, they send the Brood, and no matter what they try they fail.
Rather, I think the point has to do with Hickman's existential themes about defying inevitability, fate versus free will, and the necessity of resistance.
While I'm throwing down bets, I will put $20 that, in FOTHOXROTPOX, Krakoa will rally to defeat ORCHIS once and for all - only to find that ORCHIS and their secret machine masters were merely pawns meant to distract and delay Krakoa, in order to buy time for the real existential threat: the Dominion.
Out this week: Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance Omega (Marvel, $4.99):
Ben Percy and Geoff Shaw wrap up the crossover between Wolverine and Ghost Rider’s title with his Omega issue that finds the duo facing the demon named Stitcher.

GHOST RIDER #11
(W) Ben Percy (A) Dave Wachter (CA) Francesco Mobili HELLFIRE AND DANNY KETCH! The F.B.I. has cast out Johnny Blaze and Talia Warroad, maybe because they're too destructive and unmanageable?or maybe because there is some corruption present that reaches inside the very institution meant to protect us. As Johnny and Talia head down to Savannah to investigate a necropolis, there are hints of old friends and new foes on the horizon. A new chapter of horror is beginning for the Ghost Rider, and Danny Ketch is roaring up to speed in the rearview mirror. Rated T+
MAN-I’m gonna be real here, the ending to Ben Percy’s “Teen Titans” run was BEYOND rushed!
You can ALWAYS tell when a series reeks of “I didn’t want to end my story this way but I was forced to”. ALSO-its the LAST appearance and MENTION of Goliath the adorably fluffy dragon bat and there has been NO explanation as to WHERE he is!
I know Ben Percy’s run wasn’t that popular, but they should at least ADDRESS some stuff! Like, Wally 2 and Raven, why was their budding relationship never brought up again? Was it because Raven realized late last minute “OH SHIT-I’m only a few years younger than his adult cousin making me an adult”?
And Joran, what happened to her? Is she still in jail, does Beast Boy stay in contact with her?
AND WHY DID THIS TEAM BREAK UP IN THE FIRST PLACE(story reason, not real reason which was weird editorial nonsnese)?!
OOOOOOOOOOH-what sucks is, I can write the PERFECT fix-it fic for this, but I want it to be OFFICIAL soooooooooooo badly!

Overall this has me curious. You say “X-Force” and I perk up, written by Ben Percy and that sounds interesting. Bryan Edward HIll writing a gritty book about the various killers of mutantkind, sounds good (also when did Kwannon come back and become an actual character? I’ve dropped Marvel/X-Men pretty much in recent years.) Tini Howards hinted that Shatterstar will be showing up in Excalibur too, and something about wait until she gets her gay hands on them so ok I’m curious. Gerry Duggan doesn’t really intrigue me but Marauders is a cool pitch: X-Men but Pirates! Overall this has me interested, forgive me if I’m wary thinking Marvel will find a way to mess up Hickman and all these peoples best laid plans.
dan abnett and ben percy were really out there trying to give us lian back but instead dc decided to go with the worst idea and kill off roy too
