When the young artists come in for their Kids Art LABS on Saturday mornings, the stage is set: This week involved a provocation of rollers, ink and boxes of textures, where they are offered the idea to just start playing to uncover the possibilities for themselves. They share tips as they go with one another, grabbing more paper, different surfaces, changing scale and size of roller. The 5 - 7 year old young artists were totally energised by their playful creativity, absorbed in the power of the print roller to grab textures and make lines, spontaneous stripes of colour, overlayed again and again. It was full of lovely surprises, like when textures felt under your fingers don’t leave behind the patterns you expect in the ink. More ink? less ink? what happens to the details? A couple of things I observed they discovered in their experiments: Exploring a roller to create long repeating textures from leaves and recycling, pushed from saturated solid colour to barely visible, back and forth, and how the roller tilted on its side gives really delicate lines drawing around objects, and interwoven lines crossing again and again. So much FUN to be had with printmaking with colour! >>>>> fancy joining us?
