Chapter 7: Where's My Ark of Cypress?
The middle of July held days that felt like they had been stolen from someone else's life.
Will was busy, and so was Mike, but they caught each other in the downtime. They spent sweet coffee mornings together when Mike snuck down to breakfast early so Will could come over to his table and talk to him. Will slipped a letter under Mike's pillow when he came to do maintenance on their cabin sink one day. They met by the lake one blessed, free evening and watched the waterbirds twitter and swoop over the docks in the sunset.
They never had much time. Still, every new piece of information he learned about Will he coveted, precious. Will had a brother named Jonathan. Will rode a Schwinn Thrasher growing up, but he didn't ride bikes anymore. Will liked music, mostly punk, which was surprising as ever. Will wanted to get a dog, a terrier mutt like the one he had when he was a kid.
Sometimes, they just sat together and didn't say anything at all. Yet, their silence was comfortable, even as it was loaded with something exhilarating and full of promise. Mike never forgot the conclusion they had drawn in the woods, that they wanted each other. He thought about it nearly constantly.
But the opportunity hadn't presented itself. On occasion, they would catch a moment to make out, or feel each other up through their clothes, but those opportunities were rare. More often, their rendezvous were too public and they needed plausible deniability if someone came across them, so all they could do was sit with each other.
Still, Will liked to hold his hand. He reached for him whenever their hands were hidden enough to give him the chance. Mike thought it was cute how Will would look away while he reached for him, averting his gaze until the moment their fingers locked together, like he was scared of spooking Mike while he did it.
Will was sugary sweet. He was earnest, sensitive, and quiet – but Mike knew those things from the moment he met him. It was all the other things he discovered about him with time that were his favorites....
