Besides the obvious that Disney ripped off their own IP after cancelling it too soon (argue with the wall, they blatantly ripped off the Owl House) when you take away the edges of an "outcast" character, the conflicts left in their wake boil down to the same stock remarks from side characters "she's so weird", "look at her hair", "why does she still go here?", and that by far is the biggest letdown Hexed as displayed with it's new trailer

Look at her design, she' has an interesting hairstyle and a studded(?) bag that matches, she has fun accessories and makeup, her model looks pleasing to the eye. Nothing intentional about Billie is actually weird, it's just the aesthetics geriatric board members THINK are weird

Not to mention how she literally mogs every one of her mean classmates, it's almost like a characters ability to garner audience sympathy is connected to their looks

Do you know what actually makes weird kids? It's about your beliefs in politics and where you stand in the landscape, and it's about taking risks. Just from miss Jane Doe - Imagine my shock learning that was her surname - I know Hexed is not the movie to meaningfully tackle either topic

If the movie actually wanted to be unique, it should've stuck to the school setting, where Billie felt like she didn't belong and where her magic could've been a nice representation of her otherness, if depicting actual otherness was "too far". I don't see what bringing her to another world where she fits in perfectly, given the intrigue of the plot is hinging on her familial connection to it, would actually do for her character

ANYWAYS. If you wanted to watch a witchy isekai story about a real outcast, just pirate the Owl House. I can guarantee you it will outperform this money laundering scheme in every regard

Now, I have made this as something of a response to what's been going on with Disney's latest movie Hexed. When it was announced back in August 2025, it was originally going to be about a mother and son story centering around how the boy learns that all the things that make him weird are magical abilities. Then all of a sudden, when Disney announced it at the CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the story has not only completely changed to a mother and daughter story but some of the crew has changed too. Many people have somehow expressed disappointment. And if that wasn't bad enough, Disney finally released a trailer and everybody started bashing it completely. Looks like Hexed is probably going to meet the same fate as Wish.

Personally, I think they could've just kept the whole mother-son dynamic and have Billie be more of a guide/mentor/best friend/older sister figure to the main boy protagonist. Here’s a description that I found from a casting call.

Koko is 10 years old, he's energetic, hilarious, and smart. He doesn't really fit in with his peers and has something of a shy streak due to his experiences with bullying. He's impulsive, impatient, and easily distracted, but most of the time, he's a big ball of silly energy who's excited to make new friends.

i've seen everywhere that there's nothing that fuels creatives more than an idea executed poorly, because of the new disney movie "hexed" i now understand how that feels

in the trailer the main character is called alt, and i want to strangle someone even thinking about now, because you can't look me in the eyes and call this alt

are there some alt influences? absolutely! but no where near enough say the character is alt, like, they opened the door but didn't fucking walk through!! the character reads as though she's supposed to be punk but you can tell the designers didn't know anything about punk culture or, the more likely reason, were forced to dial it back

sooo, i went a little crazy and did my own redesign of the character

i had a lot of fun making this, i consider myself punk so it was fun thinking about what parts of the culture she would engage with

i noticed in the trailer she had embroidered the cuffs of her sleeves so i took that and ran, because diy and personalization are a big part of punk culture, i made her turn her uniform blazer into a battle jacket with a giant black widow embroidered on the back and roses on the front, i gave her gloves with Xs on the backs to imply she's a straight-laced punk(doesn't drink or use drugs), and crescent moons seem to be an important symbol in the movie so i had her embroider the phases of the moon on the cuffs of her shorts

other than that i just spiced her up a bit, i gave her more piercings, more bracelets, fishnets, belt chains, a choker, and a raccoon tail, and i made her hair spikier, boots chunkier, and her tights distressed

honestly i feel if they even just did half of what i did she would feel much more alt, the point of alt fashion is to show off that you are different, to stand out, but if she wasn't in a private school(?) i don't think you'd notice her with her official design, i have more complaints but most of them come from the ingrained misogyny when it comes to designing female leads
