Yo if anyone needs isopods or springtails I'm starting some cultures, I'm in the Alabama area so I'll have to get licenses to ship out of state but I'll actually be opening a shop on ebay if anyone is interested.

I think im finally ready to pursue A Hobby

I've been wanting to build a bioactive tank forever. I want isopods and I want plants and I want a critter, like a leopard gecko because that's probably as close to a natural habitat one will get outside of a pet shop.

I don't even know where to start but I'm gonna do it, I am.

So I decided to make a puzzle toy...

And now Damascus is trying to figure out the fruit fly dispenser.

Lincoln has gone bioactive thanks to Josh’s Frogs, Home Depot, and my local reptile store! Tomorrow I’ll post the step by step of what exactly I did!

I’m loving this tank already! It’s got tropical springtails and white dwarf isopods as the cleanup crew.

For plants, I’ve got seven in total in there! I’ve got golden/neon/jade pothos, a Boston fern, a Neoregelia, and two other plants that I forget the names of.

The background is composed of great stuff foam, aquarium safe silicone, and plantation soil/sphagnum moss. Two pieces of drift wood from Lincoln’s old tank, also sourced from Lake Superior, serve as hard scale. Tomorrow I’ll be adding in some rope ‘vines’ for further decoration.

And lastly, the substrate! I used hydroballs first, followed by a piece of landscaping fabric. My substrate is a mix of plantation soil, sphagnum moss, and coconut husk. There is also some charcoal mixed into it from the springtails. I laid down a small layer of sphagnum moss on the top, followed by an oak leaf leaf litter!

I still have to find some lighting that is bright, but not too bright, so if any of you have suggestions I’d appreciate it! Overall, I’m so happy with how this turned out and I’m hoping the two or so weeks I’m waiting for it to cycle will come to an end soon!

I’ve been working on my bioactive tank for a while now, and I feel like I’ve finally reached a really great system! All my plants are thriving, springtails and isopods are maintaining populations real well, no mold or water buildup anywhere, and the toads seem more active now that they have good plant cover.

Mourning gecko in her new home. Her sister is in there too, somewhere. I love these very fast little ladies. I hope they enjoy hunting their fruit flies in their new space tonight.
