If you're a DM, you've likely heard proclamations along the lines of "I go and see the king!" shortly after you've finished describing a completely unrelated plot hook.
Do you ever say to yourself, "I wish someone would make all the insignificant details of the city for me"?
Well, either way, I present to you:
Welcome to Bodrabod, where sages and wizards flock to. As a hub of magic, secrets are not uncommon here, and people can be somewhat cloak-and-dagger, but it's great! With a population of 500,000 full of extraordinary intelligence and magical ability, and kept in line by an elite force of eldritch knights and a mysterious order of monks, neither of which is hiding any information or powerful weapons from the public (no siree, not even one), what could go wrong?
You can download this 25-page document for free right now and you will have access to all these cool things like
- Population demographics with NPC generating guidelines
- Surrounding area with creature encounter tables
- Basic layout of nearby towns
- Writeup on 1 nearby town and rural culture
- 1 high-level dungeon outline and entrance
- Writeups on culture, history, and current events
- Landmarks including a river and reservoir, palace, temple, monastery, city wall, etc.
- 2 tavern writeups complete with rumors that can be used as plot hooks
- 1 encounter and in-depth plot hook that plunges the entire city into lockdown (geared toward a 1st-level party)
- 4 specific NPCs and 4 general NPCs, all with combat stat blocks and personality writeups
- A few monsters, including a boss monster
- 2 artifacts, one of which is completely gamebreaking
This document is not an adventure module, but can be a huge help to DMs when their characters are off doing things on their own, and it helps ease the worldbuilding process. There are plenty of adventure seeds that can be built upon, giving the DM more creative freedom than following a module, but still a chunk of a world that can be fallen back on.
Download the free PDF (it’s downloadable from my Patreon but I promise it’s free I won’t ask for any information)
Note: for me the PDF seems to get all messed up if it is downloaded in Microsoft Edge, but in Chrome it does fine.
I’m hoping to make more of these as time goes by, and hopefully I will get faster at producing them as I do more. If you want to become a $1/month patron, you will already have access to another one of these, The City of Nodrad!
