Sand Dancer by Trudie Skies Release Date: July 1, 2019 Publisher: Uproar Books
Mina is 16-years old and she is determined to become a warrior. She also has a secret. Mina has the ability to summon fire, magic that is outlawed. A confrontation in the marketplace leads to her father’s death. Determined to have her revenge, she disguises herself as a boy and seeks out the man responsible in the capital city where the king and the warrior-training academy resides.
Sand Dancer is a debut novel by Trudie Skies. Set in the desert, the author brings aspects of Arabian cultures into the story, including names of articles of clothing. The politics and intrigue are intricate, but not too complicated, and the action and pace are fast-paced and easy to follow. An interesting aspect of the novel is the exploration of the meaning of family and the love that can develop between comrades. There is an LGBTQ aspect of the story that is important to note. While exploring the concept of family, the writing is not too sentimental, which helps to keep the focus of the story on Mina’s quest for justice and training to be the warrior she wants to become.
The novel recalls other stories previously written, such as The Song of the Lioness by Tamora Pierce, which began a series of novels that feature Alanna of Trebond, who wanted to be a knight and assumes the identity of a young man to receive the training.
Mina also proves herself to be determined and take the risks to make her own decisions, that lead to unexpected consequences and show the complex interconnections of society.
In a fantasy setting, the technology available can make communication difficult. The author finds ways to overcome the lack of technology, but makes the challenges Mina faces become a bit too smooth and the interpersonal conflicts to be easily resolved.
Uproar Books is an independent publisher based in Texas, United States that focuses on fantasy and science fiction geared towards young adult readers.
