Have you ever seen a lucet? A lucet is an ancient tool used for making box cordage and here I’m using my historical replica bone lucet to make up the shoulder strap cord for the crochet beetroot bag. Since the cord is hollow, I’m planning to thread a thin cotton cord through it to give the strap some rigidity and prevent stretching when the bag is weighted.

Bone artifacts discovered in Tanzania push back the earliest known date of bone tool technology by over a million years. In Olduvai Gorge, archaeologists have discovered a range of bone tools thought to have been made and used by an ancestral human species of hominid called Homo habilis 1.5 million years ago. Known as the Oldowan people, the culture responsible for the bone artifacts was already known for their use of stone tools dating back to 2.5 million years ago. The newly identified bone artifacts show that their tool technology was more complex, advanced, and sophisticated than we knew.

Want to do a bit of bragging about a recent thrift store find that I'm super excited about.

This is a vintage crochet hook from Susan Bates made out of bovine bone. Someone who specializes in vintage crochet hooks told me that it's in really good condition based on the amount of blue enamel left on the end. You can tell it's real bone because of the small striations visible on the throat of the hook.

I had seen it at my local art thrift store, didn't pay it much mind, and left it behind before I learned what it was. I was thrilled it was still there when I went back a week later. I've found some other bone hooks from this line listed online, but none that are in this good of a condition. So happy to have this in my collection.

(also, TIL that ivory is specifically bone from tusks of certain animals, not all bone lol. Maybe you are also learning this today and can join me in my slight embarrassment for not knowing this fact before.)

Study suggests earliest use of bone tools to produce clothing in Morocco 120,000 years ago

A new study led by Arizona State University paleoanthropologist Curtis Marean and ASU doctoral graduate Emily Hallett details more than 60 tools made of bone and one tool made from the tooth of a cetacean, which includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises. These finds, first unearthed from Contrebandiers Cave, Morocco in 2011, are highly suggestive proxy evidence for the earliest clothing in the archaeological record and attest to the pan-African emergence of complex culture and specialized tool manufacture.

The invention of clothing, and the development of the tools needed to create it, are milestones in the story of humanity. Not only are they indicative of strides in cultural and cognitive evolution, archaeologists also believe they were essential in enabling early humans to expand their niche from Pleistocene Africa into new environments with new ecological challenges.
