English Post- Bodies of Broadway

Musicals have been used as a way to spark new political ideas, revolutionary ideas, and progressive change. All of this is wonderful, but something that is overlooked in the industry of musical theatre is body discrimination in casting. Body discrimination of course happens in many entertainment industries, but I feel as though it is not talked about as widely as it should, especially when it comes to musical theatre.

Let's start this out by showing my "why". Growing up I was always a really heavy kid that consistently struggled with my weight. Eating grew to be such an easy way to cope with issues I had at home and slowly became a huge part of my lifestyle. As I got older I found a passion for performance and the arts. I didn't realize right away, but pursuing the arts professionally wasn't going to be easy as a bigger guy. I would consistently go into auditions and get turned away because of my size. After several auditions and several denials I decided it was time for a change. I altered my diet, started running, and soon after found myself getting cast!!! Now that I'm beginning to get consistent work as a performer I want to help others in my field be able to do the same. That's why I'm now in pursuit of a career in fitness. Follow my journey to becoming a personal trainer!!! 😄
