Hi there!
Do you know if there were ever plans to have Hyde's mother appear in additional episodes? Think we only see her once for the career episode, although her voice was heard on certain episodes, and she was referenced at times. Her character was awful, but thought the actress portraying her was fantastic. Would have liked to see her come back instead of Bud making an appearance. His character to me was blah, but guess they wanted us to see more of Hyde's background.
Thank you.
Edna is quite present throughout season 1. She's mentioned a lot by the characters long before we ever see her or hear her voice; we're given details, etc, all of which characterizes her. Her portrayal by Katey Sagal in "Career Day" (1x18) is fantastic, and that episode depicts her complex dynamic with Hyde clearly.
We hear her voice in "Prom Night" (1x19), and her line, "They're all going to laugh at you!" is from the movie version of Steven King's Carrie. Also, when Jackie asks if she should to go inside to meet her, Hyde says sarcastically, "Trust me, she's lovely." This exchange is revealing of both Hyde's relationship with Edna and a depth to Jackie Hyde (and the audience) hadn't yet seen before.
In "Punk Chick" (1x22 -- should've been 1x21 narratively, but Fox switched the airing order), we hear Edna's voice again when Hyde decides to leave for NYC. She says, "Nothing in this house is yours!"
As T7S season 1 kept getting orders for more episodes until it was a complete season of twenty-five (I miss those days), it had three season finales. The first is "Grandma's Dead," which got pushed much later in the airing order once more episodes were ordered. The second is "A New Hope," where the cliffhanger is Eric and Donna's relationship -- are they going to be together or broken up in season 2? But with the final order of episodes, that conflict/cliffhanger was never mentioned as if it never happened.
The third and actual season finale is "The Good Son" (1x25). Before that episode is "Hyde Moves In" (1x24), where we learn his mother has abandoned him for good.
Despite her lack of visual screen-time in S1, Edna is present throughout it in different ways, leading to her character's end on the show.
During season 3, by contrast, Hyde was originally supposed to have a full arc with Bud, as portrayed by Robert Hays. They have only two episodes, though, and that might've been due to Hays's availability. That's an educated guess. Regardless of the reason, the deeper arc between Hyde and Bud was scrapped.
