Design Process: Camila
Camila is the main star of the comic pages, hence I'm very glad that Tali gave me some ideas to go off of, including examples of the basic theme they want by using a character creator to do so.
They gave a general example of how they wish for Camila to look, and specified they wish for the dress to be like a Disney princess' , and specifically to be yellow.
After I got the information from Tali, I begun composing a moodboard using Milanote. I brought in different outfit and textured hair references that I found on Pintrest, and Camila's casual render.
I tried to find references for dresses that were unique, fun, pretty, and that could give me an idea to go off of, as I dislike outright copying a reference 1 to 1.
When it came to hair I tried to find one's that are fitting, not only Camila's personality, but the ocassion within the comic pages.
The concept designs took from multiple aspects, meshing the outfits and hair references. Talisman was really happy with them, and decided on going forward with the third one. Hence, off I went to do the full reference so that I could ask for any tweaks.
As Tali wished for the dress to be yellow, I decided upon golden yellow for it to feel more graceful and warm. I added a small orange gradient at the bottom of the dress to give it some flare. Camila also has a jacket of sorts in said design. It is meant to replicate the robe in the upper right references, and the jacket that Camila is seen wearing within the show. Under the jacket is the under-part of Camila's dress. It is meant to look like the type of cover-up that Eda's dress has, as both take place of being Luz' caretaker within the show. As I wanted to add some cooler colours to the outfit, I decided to make the belt and under-part a purple, to give the illusion that the purple is darker than the rest of the dress as the line art is a fairly saturated purple.
Tali was very satisfied and requested no changes.
Overall:
I am very happy with the design. I think it looks nice and isn't too much on the eyes.
The main thing I am unhappy with is the coat. I believe I made it look too casual. I believe a pattern or changing the shape of the collar would've done a lot to help with that.
I also believe I should've added a crown, or atleast a tiara to the design. As Camila is the new Empress, it would make sense for her to have one.
