Lady Shiva

The master combatant and assassin known as Lady Shiva possesses a complicated backstory that has been altered and ret-conned on numerous occasions.  In most of these tales, Shiva is a near peerless hand-to-hand fighter who rose up from humble backgrounds to become a hugely powerful and influential figure.

In one telling, Lady Shiva was born Sandra Wu-San and grew up with her sister in an  undisclosed region of Asia.  A supremely gifted hand-to-hand fighter. Sandra ended up a pupil of the martial arts pedagogue, O-Sensei.  She trained alongside fellow students Richard Dragon and Ben Turner and quickly distinguished herself as the sensei’s most talented student and a martial artist of the highest order.

Sandra grew all but addicted to the thrill and danger of combat and it ultimately led her astray.  She left O-Sensei’s dojo and ventured off to become a mercenary, ultimately end up in the employ of for The League of Assassins.

Somewhere around this time, Sandra met David Cain, an assassin and martial artist whose skill rivaled her own.  A truly deplorable cad, Cain used trickery to take advantage of Sandra.  Cain was obsessed with producing a progeny who could act as the primary bodyguard and protector for Ra's al Ghul and a first lieutenant of the League off Assassins.  Cain believed that a child produced by himself and Sandra would prove an ideal candidate for this role.  Through coercion, Cain essentially raped Sandra, resulting in her becoming pregnant.  He then absconded with the daughter.   The child would eventually grown up to be Cassandra Cain, the heroine who has operated under the aliases of Batgirl, The Orphan and The Black Bat.  

Cain’s deplorable actions severely impacted Sandra, resulting in her giving in to the more ruthless and bloodthirsty side of herself.  Becoming an assassin, she took on the name of ‘Lady Shiva’ and traveled to America where she had confrontations with numerous heroes, including The Question, Batman and others.  

Some time thereafter, Lady Shiva aided Batman in recovering his fighting skills after his back was broken in a confrontation with Bane.  She additionally shared adventures alongside Green Arrow, Black Canary, Catwoman and Robin.  She eventually learned the identity of her lost daughter Cassandra and aided in the young woman’s training, ultimately revealing herself as Cassandra’s mother.  Some time later, it was also revealed that Shiva had a son with Ben Turner and that the lad grew up to become the individual known as The Jade Tiger.  Around this same time, Lady Shiva succeeded in usurping Ra's al Ghul's as the leader of the League of Assassins.

Actress Sung-Hi Lee portrayed a live-action version of Lady Shiva in the Birds of Prey television series.  The character has additionally featured in multiple animated projects, voiced by actresses  Gwendoline Yeo,  Kelly Hu, Finola Hughes, Rachael MacFarlane and Panta Mosleh.  Lady Shiva first appeared in the pages of Richard Dragon: Kung Fu Fighter #5 (1975).

I'm only like a 1/3 of the way thru Batgirls: One Way or Another and it's already obvious how Unserious both Steph and Cass are (!!!SPOILERS!!!)

Yes, Steph suggested they scale the walls of the watchtower when they forgot their keys, but Cass suggested a battering ram

Cass beat up muggers to get back her favorite unicorn robe despite direct instruction to stay inside. She got around this instruction by wearing a bag on her head. She also STOLE THE KEYS TO THEIR CAR

Both of them waited until Babs left to hate on the new vehicles (briefly) and take a stolen car. Loudly.

They are on the exact same wavelength 99.99% of the time in a way that is dangerous to everyone who tries to go against them

Laying low is not in their blood and they only have one (1) serious bone in their body they only sometimes use

Do you mind talking about that Cass Kon art a little more? I like how Cass is staring at her body with furrowed brows that imply like she doesn’t get the big deal, it’s just a body. But i can’t fully pinpoint kons expression. he’s in shock but why? is it because it’s her? or is it more female nudity in general. Also at first glance kon looks like clark (lol) was that also a choice? he’s a clone sure but most often people tend to change him just a bit to avoid the mistake. It could just be your style. I don’t remember if you’ve drawn him often. It could also be on purpose, and if it is what for. Sorry, i like your art and you always have interesting thoughts

Cass and kon art is not very deep unfortunately. Really for Kon's expression I was intially going for a creepy smile but after thinking abit I thought it looked too malicious. I figure Kon's objectification of her is both a lack of tact and societally ingrained. The idea that a woman's naked body is an event, its shocking, its tantalising on its own. A woman's naked body is associated with sex. As violating as his gaze feels for Cass he doesnt mean anything by it he doesnt consider that it could be violating.

For Cass I dont think she wouldve grown up with all this fuss around naked females. For her, her body is another object, it's a weapon (thats why i gave her hand wraps), its a rock on the side of the road. Its a spectacle for what it can do not something to be admired in of itself. The only person really around growing up was her Dad who definitely didnt care for making her look attractive. I think meeting Kon would be like a formative moment for her teaching her to be ashamed of her body and the attention it nets.

Also Kon looks like Clark because I think it makes sense. Alot of people give him a tan because he lived in Hawaii and curlier hair and thats cool too. I'm not very creative I just go with whatevers on model usually.
