It had been a rough day. Your pain had spiked halfway through your workday, and you had to be sat while you worked till your shift ended. At least your boss was in a good enough mood to let you take a seat till you got off.
Finally getting home felt like a breath of fresh air, being able to lay on the couch and breathe easily felt heavenly, and, somehow, your headache even felt a little less agonizing. You probably should’ve at least changed out of your work uniform to get in something comfy, but all you could muster was kicking your shoes off your feet that hung over the front of the long couch. You also could’ve gotten yourself a glass of water, but eh, you had some on your break an hour ago and walking felt like hell right now, so you opted to reach for the TV remote and just chill until your beloved got home. No more headache micromanaging, you needed time to just tune out for a while.
A little over an hour of scrolling and watching later, the front door jingled with the sound of keys then opened, and in he came. Handsome as ever, looking amazing in his hero outfit. That was really your lover. Your lips spread into a smile as you watched him walk over and greet you. “Hello, love.” He knelt beside the couch and kissed your temple, his hand touching your shoulder.
“Welcome home,” you said, feeling giddy when his hand moved up the back of your neck to play with your hair a bit. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath; he always managed to bring an air of relaxation whenever he was around you, didn’t he?
“How was your day?” His question came with a peck to your cheek before he stood and walked to the open kitchen behind the couch. “Eh. Could’ve been better. I should probably have some water; would you mind grabbing me some?”
So intimidating on the outside and yet you got to see how sweet he could be. You listened as he set his grocery bag down then opened a cupboard. When he returned, water in hand, you offered a smile that probably looked tired when you peeked open an eye. He sat beside your feet while you sipped at your glass. “How about you, Sweetheart, how was your day?” Sighing after your drink, you rolled onto your back to look him in the eye while setting the glass precariously beside the foot of the couch.
“Same old, same old.” His smile was genuine while his hand stroked your leg soothingly.
The following silence between you, only broken by the TV’s quiet dialogue, was comfortable, procured from years of living together. The gentle hands on your legs soon turned from strokes to rubbing. He’d read your tells that your pain had flared in the day. You sighed, reclining even more in the couch.
“How bad was your pain today?” His eyes stayed on your legs while he massaged the sore muscles, even rubbing your feet for a bit and then your knees.
“It wasn’t… as bad as it could’ve been, Honey.” You always hesitated when admitting you were in pain, it felt like such a small problem to have, and it happened fairly regularly. People get tired of listening to complaining, it didn’t matter that he’d been there through years of it, you still felt bad mentioning anything.
“But it was bad.”
You just looked away, and after a moment, nodded.
“Yeah… yeah, it was a rough day.”
He just tilted his head, such a soft, loving look on his face, “where?”
You gestured towards where had been aching all day, the various pains, sores, just everything that had hurt. And spot by spot his hands began massaging, eyes always watching for pained reactions to make sure he wasn’t adding to the problem instead of helping it. You honestly felt like crying. But you smiled, hands coming up to hold his face, thumbs stroking lovingly. His hands stilled as his gaze met yours and you pulled him close, resting your foreheads together.
“You’re amazing…” One of his hands came up and brushed a tear off your cheek you hadn’t realized you shed.
“You’re amazing for living with this. So brave.” With that, he turned to rest his chin on your head, pulling you up from laying to press you into his chest. His hand stroked the back of your head and your eyes drooped, fatigue coming in from the day’s events. Annoying people to listen to, pain in your everything, headache pushing alarms to the absolute front of your attention, it was all overwhelming. But he was always there to help soothe the edge and make sure you felt better than alright at the end of the day.
He rubbed your back and nuzzled his face into your hair, “bed?” Your head nodded slightly into his collarbone, as if you were nuzzling him back, and he gathered you up in his arms, years of hero work making it easy peasy to carry you off to your shared room for a bit of cuddling and a nap before dinner.
What would you do without such a lovely partner there to ease every ache?
