Revolt of the Batavi

The Revolt of the Batavi took place in the Roman province of Germania Inferior ("Lower Germania") between AD 69 and 70. It was an uprising against the Roman Empire started by the Batavi, a small but militarily powerful Germanic tribe that inhabited Batavia, on the delta of the river Rhine. They were soon joined by the Celtic tribes from Gallia Belgica and some Germanic tribes.

Julius Caesar/Mabinogion

Julius Caesar invaded Britain twice in 55 and 54 BC. The only surviving texts from this truly ancient era are the records from Caesar himself, which were written later in Gaul and with the benefit of consideration and hindsight. In ‘De Bello Gallico’ (his account of the Gallic Wars), Caesar states that on his first invasion he was forced to flee Prittan and leave a great deal of booty and many slaves on the beach, due to a ‘threatening and impending storm’. During his second invasion Celtic tribes buried their differences and united together under Cassivellaunus, the king of the Catuvellauni tribe. Cassivellaunus made an impact on the British consciousness. He appears in British legend as Cassibelanus, one of Geoffrey of Monmouth's kings of Britain, and in the Mabinogi, Brut y Brenhinedd and the Welsh Triads as Caswallawn, son of Beli Mawr. Unfortunately things did not go well for the Britons. Five Celtic tribes surrendered to Caesar and revealed the location of Cassivellaunus's stronghold. On hearing of the defeat and the devastation of his territories, Cassivellaunus surrendered. Hostages were given and a tribute agreed. Caesar returned to Gaul where a poor harvest had caused unrest. The Roman legions did not return to Britain for another 97 years.

The Iberian peninsula prior to the Carthaginian invasion and partial conquest was a melange of different tribal influences, with the Celtic influx being the most  recent and most pervasive as this map shows.

The Battle of Vercellae, or Battle of the Raudine Plain, in 101 BCE was the Roman victory of Consul Gaius Marius over the invading Celto-Germanic tribe of the Cimbri near the settlement of Vercellae in the Roman province of Cisalpine Gaul.

Halloween

Es una fiesta cuyo origen está en el mundo celta, concretamente en la fiesta pagana de Samhain.

Los orígenes se remontan a Irlanda hace más de 3.000 años, ya que coincidiendo con el solsticio de otoño, los campesinos celebraban el fin de la temporada bajo la creencia de que durante esa noche del 31 de octubre los espíritus caminaban entre los vivos.

Las leyendas explican que los espíritus podían atravesar la línea que separaba el mundo de los vivos del de los muertos justo esa noche porque era cuando esta más se estrechaba.

Según las leyendas, la gente se protegía de los espíritus malignos y los intentaba alejar mediante hogueras, o máscaras y disfraces para evitar ser reconocidos. También colocaban en sus casas huesos, calaveras o cualquier otro objeto relacionado con la muerte.

Pero no sólo los espíritus malos cruzaban la línea, también lo hacían los buenos. Por tanto, mucha gente comenzó a organizar esa noche del 31 de octubre banquetas en honor a estos espíritus buenos como forma de homenajearlos y comunicarse con ellos.
