So, there’s actually two words in Japanese that are loaned in from the English word romance. They translate to the same word (romance) in English, but have different spellings and different meanings in Japanese. The first is the more common and recognizable one: ロマンス/romansu means a love story/romantic affair.
That’s not the word that One Piece uses.
Instead, One Piece uses ロマン/roman, which explicitly refers to the Arthurian kind of romance: a heroic tale, an impossible dream, an epic adventure.
