THE STRAW HATS AND THE KID PIRATES GO - BEAST MODE
OKAY. ULTI AND PAGE ONE. lots of fun stuff re: these two so i’m just throwing it all in one post.
first of all, ulti is trying to speak using arinsukotoba, the high-class courtesan dialect i mentioned earlier as being used by komurasaki. emphasis on trying- she’s not very good at it, and tends to mix it with much more casual speech, especially cause she also uses the rude omae for ‘you.’ the overall effect is quite similar to luffy completely failing at using de gozaru.
her nickname for page one, which gets translated as ‘pay-pay’ in english, is ペーたん/pē-tan in japanese, with -tan being like, a really cutesy/childish sort of honorific- it’s basically an especially childish way of mispronouncing the already cutesy -chan.
also, it’s not completely clear, but i’m inclined to say they really are siblings, because she calls him ウチのペーたん/uchi no pē-tan here, which in this context reads as her calling him a family member. (meanwhile, he calls her 姉貴/aneki, the feminine version of aniki, which can refer either to a blood sibling or just a respected older sister figure.)
(ALSO also, ulti’s name is half in hiragana and half in katakana (うるティ/uruti). given her personality and the mask she wears, i think it might be a play on うるさい/urusai, which means ‘loud/noisy’ and is also a way of saying ‘shut up.’)
Jimbei is breaking out the serious talk...and then there’s Chopper
love how oda just accidentally picks the best days to release the best characters
