Hi, Stephanie! Do you have any resources for developing a backstory for a muse or any favorite backstories that you'd like to see more of? I'm stumped at the moment and I hate it because I don't really like playing muses if I'm not sure about their history (and I really want to use Daisy Ridley as an fc.) (also I saw that you like Amanda Arcuri as an fc and we love that.)
I’ve had to type this all out & make this list like at least 5 times because Chrome kept crashing it. It drove me insane.. Anyways! I personally don’t have any “favorite” backstories. I usually use the plot of the group/1x1/etc to inspire what character I create. However, I do have a few questions that I always ask about a character when I’m first starting to create a character:
1) What is their relationship with their parents/family? 2) How do they feel about love & relationships? 3) Do they open up to people easily? Why or why not? 4) Is there anything that they resent or regret about their past? 5) If they had to describe themselves using any 3 words, what would those words be?
You can answer those questions as simply or as in depth as you want to. Those are usually just stepping stones I use to take me deeper into the character. Here are some resources that others have created that might help you as well:
— “So You Want To Make An OC?” — “Creating’s OCs” — “Developing Your Characters & Making Them Interesting” — “'Creating a Character' Masterpost” — A tag full of character development help — Some Original Backstories — Backstories based on Lana Del Ray songs — Random backstory generator — “5 Tips To Create a Backstory” — Character creation sheets & surveys — Character questionnaires — Another tag of character development help — “The Ultimate Character Questionnaire”
Hopefully this helped you at least a little bit. Sorry it took me so long to answer. If you ever need more help, you can always come back here & I’ll be glad to offer my assistance!! I love Daisy & I wish more people would use her so I’m happy to hear about that. Annnd lastly-- I love Amanda with my whole heart & can’t wait to actually use her for a muse in a group that doesn’t immediately die off. xx

THINGS I'M AFRAID OF - and how to use them in my characters
Characters need to resonate with readers. Whether it’s your protagonist (hero) or antagonist (villain), as a writer, you want your readers to connect with your characters. They won’t read stories if they don’t care what happens to your characters. Because I write in the suspense/thriller and horror genres, I want my villains and say and do things that not only scare and intimidate my other…

I love wild and unruly characters. You know the ones who just want to have a good time, the ones who refuse to do what you want them to do, the ones who do not let you into their head or the characters who take us off on wild goose chases.
Of course it’s never the author’s fault that their imaginary friends are running riot….um…no…fault lies with the unruly characters! Yes!
Sometimes you do need…

The question about childhood dreams on this questionnaire always amuses me because most of my characters didn't keep those childhood dreams through to adulthood. I mean when I was four I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, because my mom had just had a (relatively benign and successfully removed) brain tumor removed. That didn't last long. Most of my characters are similar--the things they wanted to be were somewhat ridiculous things that they could probably never be (I couldn't be a neurosurgeon--I am about 10000% too germaphobic to ever deal with sick people, let alone cut them open and operate on them) based on a simplistic childlike view of the world, and they grew out of those dreams.
