So! I just got back from the character auditions in NYC. I was sadly cut after the first round. But, what I did get to experience was so much fun! Everyone there had the same mindset and were very supportive.
Like many people have said before, they were looking for very specific bodies and faces. I honestly didn’t expect to make it far anyway, since I’m about a size 18. The casting director told us from the very beginning that only very few people would be asked to stay longer, so everyone knew what to expect.
It was all quite fast-paced from my perspective. They took people in even before 10:00, when the audition was scheduled to start. I believe they took my group (51-100) in also before 10. I’m not sure how many people were there total, but I was number 96 and the highest I saw was 147 before they took my group to start learning the dance.
I’m not a trained dancer, I just have experience from dancing in musicals. However, this dance was a quite simple 2 8-count combination. We marched, did a jazz square with arms, skipping/marching, pivots with jazz hands, and that was it! It was super fun and everyone was laughing and having a great time.
If you are considering auditioning for character performer, I strongly recommend you do so. It is a great experience if you’ve never auditioned before and you never know what they might see in you!
