“I need some air. I can’t breathe,” the protagonist whispered, shoving away from their lover. They felt xer move behind them, reach for their hand, and they tried to move away. “Leave me alone!”
“No, wait!” xe pleaded, grabbing the protagonist’s wrist. “I need to explain.”
“This whole thing was a setup. And you knew,” the protagonist said, avoiding their lover’s gaze. It was filled with too much guilt and shame. “I thought I was saving the day, but I was nothing more than a glorified, oblivious actor, playing out a part. And this-,” they waved a hand between them, “-was all an act too.”
“No!” their lover snapped. “It might have started out that way, but-,”
“But you grew to love me? You thought love would trump the massive lie you told me?!” The protagonist spun around, glaring at xer. “In what world, in what mindset did you think this would end happily?!”
Their lover’s face said enough. They hadn’t planned for the truth to get out. They were happy to lie and happy to live the lie.
